Hello Everyone! I just thought you might want to have a look at what I had written as a response to the article on Kiri Te Kanawa's nonsense. Take a look! www.nzrealitytv.com/2008/02/diva-kiri-slags-westernra.html"For being a professional who has 'trained for 40 years', you would think that Kiri Te Kanawa would state what she apprantly believes to be 'judgement' more tactfully. Clearly, Kiri's comments about Hayley Westenra's 'fakeness' are pure jealousy, if not annoyance at Hayley being the top selling artist in New Zealand, under a genre that is more appreciated than opera. Hayley has not become another Charlotte Church, nor has she changed herself at the slightest from she first started. She is an example of a true star - a true person. To mark her as 'fake' is almost as laughable as stating that Helen Clark is an equivelant of George W. Bush. I also think part of this has to do with the Starlight Symphony being posponed until the day of Hayley's concert, where the danger of more people would attend hers rather than the Starlight Symphony is a threat to Kiri. What's worst about this issue is Kiri Te Kanawa's snobbery. Her conceit at proudly claiming her '40 year career' makes it sound as though it would take all of us 40 years to complete any successful career. Talent, is the key here Kiri, and not necessarily years of experience. Oh, and Hayley, we as a nation are so proud of you to have not commented on this nonesense. It just showcasts the great maturity you have as a true person." Hope that will clear a few things up! :2fun: Dori

Even the British press is now publishing the story! Regarding Will Martin, it was certainly not Kiri Te Kawana's choice to include him in the line-up. He was offered the position by the organizers so I don't think she had her word to say about the guest artists' choice. Here's what the Telegraph has to say. Stephany

I love listening to Kiri te Kanawa, but I agree her comments, if she really said them, were completely unprofessional. It is true that opera singing uses the entire voice, while other styles use less of it and if she had said that Hayley wasn't an opera singer, that's one thing, but to call crossover singers 'fake' is utterly and completely ridiculous! To clarify what she meant about the mikes though, Kiri is not saying that she or other opera singers (who I guess to her are the only 'real' singers ) do not use mikes, but that they can sing without them. Opera singers can fill halls with just their natural voices (I heard it done and I'm telling you it has to be experienced to be believed!) but even they sometimes have to use mikes if the venue is super big or obviously if they are recording it for television - how else could the sound be captured? She was speaking about singers who cannot sing without mikes - which most pop singers cannot do. All I can say is she has obviously never head Hayley sing, and if she did, well, then she's deaf! It's so sad when singers become such divas! So many people are trying to change the image of opera and comments like Kiri's aren't helping! My voice teacher is one of the kindest, most encouraging people I've ever met in my entire life. She may not like some other styles of music, but she always finds ways to compliment and help everyone regardless, and because she's such a sweetheart she has gotten even the rock musicians to come hear her perform at Carnegie Hall. That's the way to win people!! Kiri on the other hand has just turned several potential fans off from opera needlessly. And why should she when she even has her own program to help young kiwi musicians? Seems a bit like a double standard to me... ahem... Anyways. Cheers for Hayley! She has shown again to be a true professional. She has a gorgeous voice and a gorgeous personality which to me means even more... This business about mics. The purist critics are always labouring this. The refer to it as the ability to project over an orchestra, and opera people and purists have a ridiculous obsession with it. The ability to do this is more about hitting the right frequancies than having a very loud and powerful voice. If you shape your throat in the right way you will produce extra frequencies (a singers "formant frequancy"). This is in the 3000khz range a much higher frequancy than the 800khz or so that orchestras produce. So someone using this technique, which isn't hard to learn, will be able to project over an orchestra. www.become-a-singing-master.com/singing-technique-and-projection.htmlBut it's not much use outside of opera; and the notion that this circus trick has anything to do with Art is ridiculous.

This is shocking, Stephany. What an embarrassement to New Zealand. She should be ashamed of herself. I have just sent a letter to the editor or the NZ Herald. I sure hope it gets published!

I .....I guess the thing I have a problem with is how Kiri worded it. She could have said she hated crossover and left it at that. Why attack Hayley?Oksy Oksy, Jealousy. Simple jealousy. Perhaps a sprinkling of tunnel-vision too. Gene

Incidentally, many critics preferred Hayley's Maria from WSS to Kiri's. That's gotta smart. Like I said in my last post.......jealousy. Simple jealousy. Perhaps some tunnel-vision too. Gene

The only thing i'm thinking of, after reading this........................ When you're getting older, you have to accept, that there is a new generation to take things over!!!!! Maybe, the time is now.........for Dame Kiri to start her final tour!! Greetz JOYCE. Hi Joyce, Oh by the way, in addition to jealousy and tunnel-vision, I think there is some old-school denial in there too. Gene

Hi Natasha, Last March, I had the pleasure of seeing Hayley perform at a pub-restaurant in New York. A few of the other HWI people were also there, but I didn't know them at the time. I can tell you that Hayley's projection and volume were excellent. Some of the notes that she sang were so strong that they actually had an impact on my ears....and I'm being serious. I think that we need to kidnap Kiri, tape her to a chair and sit her in front of Hayley during a concert! Let's not forget to put some tape over her mouth too! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifCheers, Gene

Hi all, I was quite shocked to read what Kiri Te Kanawa had mentioned about Hayley. It was wrong of her to specifically mention Hayley. I'm so glad that Hayley hasn't commented on this action; it shows who has more maturity. I look forward to seeing some sort of retraction and apology from "Dame" Kiri Joe

Hello folks! Dame Kiri has definitely shot herself in the foot with this one, but unfortunately she can still sing! I agree that Hayley has shown great maturity by declining to comment, and I expect Will Martin will do the same. Joe, don't hold your breath! Richard

Hello all, Thought you all might like to see the scan of the front page of our morning paper. My mom made a good point - look at the differences in the photos, where they want to make Hayley look 'silly', and Kiri look 'prestigous'. Quite shocking - and rude, but here we are.... Don't you agree? Dori EDIT: I reduced the size of the scan because it was too large. Thanks - Stephany
