The September/October issue of magazine "NZ Inspired" features an article about Hayley Westenra. There is also a coverage of the Passchendaele commemoration. Unfortunately it seems to be only available in New Zealand.

I typed my postcode and the systems says "Sorry, there are no distribution points within 15km of your postcode."

Hello everyone

I have tried a whole load of UK postcodes for all the major cities and it would only appear to be available in the London Area, mainly from "Fitness First" Health Club's, although there are a few exceptions.

It is also available from New Zealand House in Central London, maybe Richard could check it out.

To have a look yourselves, just type in 'W1' etc. and you'll see a list.

Looks like I may be going to London on Monday!

Let me know how you get on on Monday - I should be working in Central London on Wednesday and the search threw up at least 10 distribution points within a mile of the office for me to check out if you're unsuccessful.

How strange is it to have a NZ magazine based in London, with poeple in NZ not eligible to have a copy!! Very strange... well, if anyone gets their hand on it, i will patienly await the scans...

I found the magazine in the New Zealand Shop at Covent Garden. I don't have scanning facilities, but the article about Hayley is only one page, so I'll type it out.

In Her Own Words

Stephen Jewell talks to Hayley Westenra about rugby, the Dalai Lama and what it's like to sing for your country.

Hayley Westenra cannot believe her luck. The former Christchurch, now West London-based 20-year-old soprano has been appointed the All Blacks' official mascot, which means that she will sing the New Zealand national anthem at all of the Kiwis' games at the Rugby World Cup. Well almost - the French are currently "being a bit of a pain" and refusing to allow vocalists of other nationalities to perform at the matches held across the Channel.

This all comes on top of a typically busy year for Westenra, who apart from releasing her third solo album, Treasure, has added the Dalai Lama to her long list of celebrity audiences, which also includes the Queen, George W Bush and Tony Blair. And somehow she also found the time to co-write her forthcoming biography, In Her Own Voice, and to appear on a West Side Story tribute album with Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo and How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria winner Connie Fisher.

How important is rugby in your life?

"Without sounding over the top, the All Blacks rugby matches I perform at are probably the most exciting performances I give. Living in New Zealand, you take the All Blacks and rugby for granted because it's such a big part of our culture. Now I've been travelling overseas and living away from home, I'm much more interested in rugby. If there's a rugby match on - particularly if the All Blacks are playing - I'll tune in. Having the opportunity to support one of the world's greatest teams is so exciting."

What arrangements have you made to follow the All Blacks' progress?

"I'll be at the games without a doubt - even if I'm not allowed to sing, I'll still be flying the flag. I usually get a couple of tickets to the matches so I have many jealous friends back home. And when I'm out on the pitch, I don't feel like I'm on my own. When I'm singing the national anthem, I feel like one of the supporters. I'm just leading the national anthem; I don't feel like it's a big solo. I'm generally never nervous before these performances, which means that I really do enjoy the moment. I don't know what it will be like for the World Cup but it's a really thrilling experience."

How important is it to love rugby if you're a proper Kiwi?

"Rugby isn't the be-all-and-end-all but there's got to be something wrong with you if you don't enjoy rugby. With a team like the All Blacks as your national team, you cannot not love the sport. The All Blacks are on top form at the moment, although I don't want to say too much and jinx it. I'm very proud to be the All Blacks' mascot."

What was it like performing for the Dalai Lama?

"I was invited to perform for him over in Derry a few weeks ago. He was supporting his friend's charity, Children in Crossfire. His friend [Irishman Richard Moore] was shot in the eye and blinded as a child by an English soldier. The Dalai Lama had heard of his story and had written to him. The soldier was there too and it was a really amazing experience; to be able to forgive the guy who shot you and be able to stand up there together is incredible. I was there in my role as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and I sang Pokarekare Ana and Danny Boy."

Hayley Westenra's autobiography will be out later this year.

There are two rather old photographs with the article. One is the original cover of Odyssey, and the other is a photograph of Hayley that I believe was taken outside the Fairfield Halls in Croydon on 1st October 2003.
