Before anyone gets too worked up, it's worthwhile remembering that this is the first time Hayley has performed on television in about 3 years. Also if you look at her concert schedule you'll be reminded that Hayley only made two public appearances in 2015, five in 2016 and two so far in 2017. A few of those have only been 1 or 2 songs. It's been more than 5 years since she last headlined her own major tour.
When you think about it, it's kind of impressive Hayley was able to get back on the horse with a big show like this so easily, given that she's been out of the scene so much. You can't really compare things to the days when Hayley was constantly touring week in week out. Like everything, it all gets better with practice, familiarity and confidence. In the past, being on stage would have been second nature for Hayley but I'm sure these days it is very much out of the ordinary.
I say this as someone who believes trying to sound good singing The Prayer is like being expected to dance ballet with a heavy stone tied around your neck (sorry I hate The Prayer lol).
Just hope this gives Hayley some inspiration to get back into it with her own musical pursuits.

You're right, I don't understand it, and I still don't. I don't know what register is, so I still have no clue what you mean. You'll have to explain that to me, too. LOL My choir teachers never covered anything like that (at least not in the main class; my high school did offer after school voice classes). But, as I said, I knew you'd agree about the whole clenching your teeth thing. Obviously there's a difference between a head voice, and what I was calling singing through your head. I kind of made up that term on my own. What I'm referring to tends to sound very tinny and sometimes nasally. It's almost like singing through your nose, but not quite. So maybe we should call it the Sinus voice. It's basically singing through your sinuses of your head. Now do you get what I mean? LOL So, anyway, that's why I was confused, because I made up my own term, singing through your head. LOL If she was sick, it didn't show. Not to me! Remember, I've heard her sing sick LIVE, and she still sounded outstanding (though I didn't know she was sick till later). She did sound more off the next night when I wasn't there, though. The only note here where I thought she was off was the part where she says "we hope each soul WILL find..." The word Will was a bit squeaky and strained, and her voice almost broke. So, that part was certainly imperfect, but I still don't think she was sick, and there was certainly nothing disappointing about it. I listened to Never Saw Blue again, and it's better than I remembered. It was just a tiny bit stiff, nervous, her voice quavery and dropping flat a couple of times, and not holding notes for very long; a little too "talky" in spots. So, while it was a good peformance, it was not quite concert or album material, sorry. Greener Lands was basically the same setting, her singing it raw, but she was looking away from the camera, so that was probably less nerve-wracking. Here she didn't look at it much, but when she did, she looked very self-conscious.

Simba, how's this one? This is very recent. I thought she cut short "I pray you'll be our eyes" too short, which she didn't do in the Singer video. However, I think she sounded less strained and more relaxed, otherwise. She was a bit harder to hear with the guys, though, as noted below.
I also listened to the high quality video with Fernando, and while she sang very well, I realized I now prefer the newest version with Terry. Fernando is certainly a more powerful singer, but that was part of my problem. He's a little too loud, so you can't hear Hayley very well when they sing together. The same is true with the 3 guys in the above video. Also, he added too much gusto so it messed up the tune a little for me. I'm not going to bother with the low quality video, because it's hard to watch, and it's from the same tour, only a few days apart in difference, at the most.

My first impression was that Hayley seemed more nervous than we've seen her in the past (except on the odd occasion) especially at the start, but once she got into it, I enjoyed her performance. Most if not all of the 'problems' highlighted by some may be an inevitable consequence of being out of 'public performance' practice and off TV, and a certain lack of confidence compared to her regular touring, TV and recording days. The burden of expectation in trying to help the other singer to do well probably played on her mind, too. If Hayley can get back more into the swing of public performance again, (i.e. more performances!) I think her confidence and consistency of singing would soon recover - but again, I did enjoy her performance, especially after the somewhat nervy start. Cheers, Dave

Her somewhat "nervy" start wasn't much compared to what I've heard in the past. Think Washington DC, her first song at live concerts, etc. I would think being on national TV would be extra nerve-wracking. If she knew the kind of nit-picking she gets from an outstanding performance like this, no wonder she might get nervous! The burden of expectation indeed. Edit: Please note in the photo below the earpiece, which is something she's never been keen on to use when singing, so that might also contribute to any nervousness.

Here's another video of the performance, but with more at the beginning, including their entrance onto the stage, which was very nice:

Here are a few rehearsal shots of this performance that I found on the Taiwan fan page on Facebook:
