NZ Stuff have published an excellent and, perhaps, previously unseen video from 1999 of Hayley singing Mists Of Islay in the final of the NZ Young Entertainer 1999 when she was 11 years old. I've never seen it before, anyway. Here is the article and video: www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/music/88190229/before-they-were-famous-hayley-westenras-meteoric-rise so please click on that to read the article and view it! I have taken the liberty of extracting Hayley's part in this video for posterity and have uploaded it onto our Youtube Channel - it's below but please click through to the above link first - they deserve every click they can get for posting this amazing bit of history! Cheers, Dave

That's wonderful, Dave! I've posted the HWI video on our Facebook page with a link to the story. It's a great start to the year! Richard Pure magic and very nostalgic. The judge certainly got it right when he said that Hayley was going to have a long career. A video nugget of pure gold (or should that be chicken! ). Martin

What a gorgeous 11-year old she was! And what a fantastic bit of Hayley history!!!! Did anyone else catch a glimpse of the rest of the Westenra family in the front of the audience?

Wow, what a wonderful new video! I'd be shocked if the others hadn't caught the Westenra family. They would have had to be asleep. I am positive it's a newly-released video. It's such good quality for being that long ago. I'm guessing the video was only recently sent in to them, and perhaps they were able to make sure the video was of the highest quality. It's great that Hayley still has reason to allow herself a media slot. That means she's going to be back soon, I feel sure of it. I never realized this competition was sort of like the Americans' Star Search type show (there were no Got Talent shows back then). It was so fascinating to see this.

I've found a screenshot of the family: Sophie was eight and Isaac was five. Richard

Hi Libby, I have checked the source website i.e. NZ On Screen, which is: To whom we are, I am sure, all very grateful! I have searched the website and cannot find anything else including Hayley, but they are clearly adding new conrtent all the time so more may appear in the future. I checked the embedded video data and see that it was first encoded by them on 27 September 2016, probably copied from an original video tape of TV NZ, which is where it was originally broadcast on TV2 in 1999. You can watch the entire live final in three parts here: www.nzonscreen.com/title/mcdonalds-young-entertainers-grand-final-1999 but I cannot see any additional appearances of Hayley other than as part of the closing sequences with the other competitors after the results were announced. Incidentally, in part 3, there is a guest performance by a young Vanessa Mae! Cheers, Dave

Thank you Dave for sharing the video! Very interesting find indeed. Love seeing the Westenra family there supporting her. Love the dress! Hayley sang very well for an 11 yr old, which is of no surprise. I don't know how the competition ends, but did Hayley win? And do we know what the other 2 songs Hayley performed in the regional and semi-finals? Thanks!
