Hi all, I thought I'd post that unsurprisingly Hayley is featured on the new rugby world cup 2015 album singing God Defend New Zealand: 1. World in Union - Paloma Faith 2. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot - Ella Eyre 3. Jerusalem - Russell Watson / The Arts Symphonic Orchestra / Nick Ingman 4. Land of My Fathers - Katherine Jenkins / David Temple / Nicholas Dodd 5. Ireland's Call - The High Kings 6. Flower of Scotland - The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines / Lucy Kay / Lt. Col. N. J. Grace OBE RM 7. Delilah - Tom Jones 8. God Defend New Zealand - Hayley Westenra 9. Hymne des Marseillais - Roberto Alagna / Bertrand De Billy / The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden 10. Abide with Me - Fron Male Voice Choir 11. Cwm Rhondda - Only Men Aloud 12. I Vow to Thee, My Country - The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines / Lt. Col. N. J. Grace OBE RM / Jonathan Antoine 13. We'll Keep a Welcome - The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines / Richard & Adam / Lt. Col. N. J. Grace OBE RM 14. Waltzing Matilda - André Rieu feat. Mirusia 15. Danny Boy - Charlotte Jaconelli / The Band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines / Lt. Col. N. J. Grace OBE RM 16. This Is Rugby - Philip Sheppard 17. World in Union - Shirley Bassey & Bryn Terfel The album is released on 25th September. Personally I wish they had included her version of World in Union, that would be much better than Paloma Faith's version IMO. Also would be great if Laura Wright was singing Swing Low Sweet Chariot rather than Ella Eyre, I've heard a snippet of her version and don't think much of it at all. Is nice to see Hayley being included too though for NZ. I wonder if it's the old(er) version or the version she sang for the special edition of Treasure or ROD (I can't remember which off hand, or was it both? ) Sing

Equally surprising is that Laura Wright is not singing either "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" or "Jerusalem", considering that she has been first choice to sing the latter at all recent England rugby matches.

I think I'll keep waiting !! I heard Paloma Faith on the ITV intro last night and it was WAY short of Hayley's version. Someone on Youtube said it sounded like a squawking parrot ! I was surprised Laura Wright didn't sing the National Anthem (especially as the commentator said she always did at Twickenham). She did sing "World in Union" (until it was ruined by a rapper !) so maybe the organisers thought one thong song was enough ! Thorry Richard ! The eth key on my keyboard hath thtuck ! As for the rugby England had a satisfactory win against Fiji but they are in a difficult group. The top two qualify so Wales and Australia will be hoping to progress at the host's expense. Anyway, here's the moment Laura got "rapped !"

Hi Jeff,
I can't think what else could be wrong with it. Wrong song for the singer, wrong singer for the song and a dreadful arrangement.
Paloma is not a bad singer.Just not suited to this type of song.
I can think of at least 6 UK based singers better suited.
In an attempt to make the song suit Paloma they ruined a good song
IMO

That was a wonderful performance by Laura Wright,
Jeff's commentary notes certainly made me laugh.
What a spectacular piece of publicity for Laura, the rapping was grand, music grows, changes / evolves and develops with each new generation.
The classical purists must be spinning like Dyson motors in their graves at this abuse and denigration of Holst's work, but I wonder would Holst be secretly pleased to have a Goddess like Laura singing such wonderful lyrics to his beautiful composition. I like to imagine he is grinning like a proverbial Cheshire cat.
Some years back Hayley's version was played or RTE Lyric FM, and in just one bound the purists were up and e mailing George Hamilton to moan, moan, moan.

Paloma Faith? Heard the name but I've no idea what she sounds or sings like and from the above, I don't think I want to!
Should have been Hayley again!
Cheers, Dave

Ah, but since it is happening in England, I suppose they need an English singer. I don't know why they didn't choose Laura.

And what did "the boy" sing (see my post in the 2011 RWC thread)? Hayley is following Paloma Faith, just in case anyone wants to know.

Hi Libby. Paloma sang the World in Union song on the 2015 album whereas Laura and the boy sang the song at the opening ceremony

Anyway, here's the moment Laura got "rapped !" I just listened to Paloma Faith singing World in Union on YouTube. I really like Paloma Faith's music but this song just isn't for her. I also listened to Laura Wright singing it in this video and she was good. She didn't seem to have very good projection, energy, and she was a tad pitchy. But far better suited to the song than Paloma, but not as good as Hayley.

Just listened to Paloma's version...I read the top comment as I clicked play, it said she sounded like a dying cat, I was like Mmmm it can't be that BA---oooh right....now I get it....Hayley's version shone not only because of her amazing rendition but probably the most spine tingling 'arrangement' of the beautiful song, nice build up, scale change, big final note, everything added to the grandeur.....This arrangement lacks all the splendour.....And Laura Wright's version was only better but not great. So dull and boring, had no emotion to it. If anyone should be singing this song from England, I think it'd be Leona Lewis....great Talent, would have added a new flavor to the song....ofcourse not beating Hayley's nevertheless.

On reflection I feel the guy on Youtube who compared Paloma to a parrot was very harsh. Having given this matter due consideration I have come to the conclusion he should at the earliest opportunity offer his sincerest apologies to the parrot. Back to the serious stuff and Ireland got their campaign underway in grand style scoring 50 points against Canada while Japan caused a massive shock in beating 2 time champions South Africa. Japan play Scotland next. Later today the mighty All Blacks play their first match against Argentina. NZ are hot favourites to lift the trophy again but a crumb of comfort for other teams is that no side has ever retained the World Cup and this time of course they don't have home advantage and also their lucky mascot is for the very best of reasons back home in Christchurch.
