There have been 2 classical singing acts on AGT this season... that I think are worth sharing on this forum (there was one girl who sang Con Te Partiro, but she was very cringeworthy). First is, the all-male group who call themselves Vox, since apparently that's Latin for voice. They sang the usual Nessun Dorma, but they did so very well. I enjoyed their performance very much. However, I am concerned they'll be the same as all the other male classical groups out there, but as long as they're on the show, at least, I'll probably enjoy them. I will say their sound pleases me way more than Il Divo's, that's for sure. I think pretty much any of the male opera groups other than Il Divo have a better sound than they do. One of the guys is from Washington state... or is he? His answer of where he was from was a bit confusing. LOL Here is their performance, which was aired last night: There was also an 11-year-old girl named Arielle Baril who sang the usual female opera song, O Mio Babbino Caro. Another Jackie? Well, she's not as tiny as Jackie was, and I think her tone is deeper and much more mature-sounding at this age than Jackie's ever was. However, nerves and emotion got the better of her, and so some of the notes (mainly the high ones) ended up a bit off-pitch and not executed very smoothly. So, I can't say every moment was wonderful to hear. However, I think if she's able to master her nerves and emotion, she'll do great. Possibly as she grows older and takes more vocal lessons, she'll do even better later on. So, at the moment, I'm looking forward to hearing more from her, to see if she's worth watching. If her next song isn't any better, then I'll probably move on. But right now, I want to give her a chance before I pass on her. One thing about Jackie is that she's always been melodramatic while she sings, and even when she talks, which seems so artificial. So, while she may have hit all of the notes better than this girl, everything else was just theatrics, fake. She was just a little girl. Arielle is the same age, but she's not quite as cutesy, and had no theatrics, but instead got emotional, and made a few vocal errors in the process. If either of these acts do really well (Arielle is already through to the live shows), then perhaps separate artist threads can be made, but for now, this thread will do.

Hi Libby!
Thank you for sharing the info about these two acts! Up until now, I only watched a few eps of AGT...I hope Vox and Arielle continue to do well. I shall be on the lookout for when Arielle is performing again!

Thanks for the videos, Libby! Vox are just another clone of Il Divo and Blake etc, but Arielle seems exceptionally talented for her age! Richard

Talking of boy bands (which we weren't really) did I hear that G4 are going to be touring together again?

Thanks for the videos, Libby! Vox are just another clone of Il Divo and Blake etc, but Arielle seems exceptionally talented for her age! Richard Yes, I agree somewhat (about Vox), although I find their voices much more pleasant to listen to than Il Divo's. I'm not really fond of the name Vox though. It sounds too much like box or fox. Also it reminds me of a VCR my family had once, with the brand name, Magnavox! LOL I wish there weren't so many of these groups, but they did well, IMO, so I'll still look forward to at least seeing them on the show. Right now I doubt I'd buy their album, but time will tell. And if Forte are any indication, and Vox do anywhere near as well as they did (4th place), Vox will end up with one CD after the show, and then possibly be asking for pre-orders for their next album, which doesn't (or didn't) even exist yet! I am looking forward to Forte's album, but that could be a while. They put out a music video of themselves singing an "opera" version of a Game of Thrones song. I didn't know the song already, but I enjoyed it very much, as did fans of GoT's. The singer Hana of Korea, who auditioned with them originally and then dropped out, is back, while Fernando Varela is now out. I always thought Hana had the best voice of the group, and now I still do. I'm a little disappointed that Fernando is gone, after all that (but can you blame him?), but at the same time I'm very glad Hana is back. I posted about this in the Forte thread when the news came out, as well as the GoT's music video. I'm glad you enjoyed Arielle's performance. I was afraid everyone would be cringing at her slightly pitchy notes, but it was so obvious she was nervous, and then at the end, very emotional, so I knew it wasn't because she wasn't a good singer. I really like her tone in between those notes. I'll be looking forward to her performance on the live shows, though I do hope she can control her voice a bit better. Joe, since Arielle was given the "golden buzzer", that means she won't be in the Las Vegas call-back rounds. I would guess the live shows don't start for maybe 2 weeks; probably 2 call-backs episodes (I hope there aren't more than that, they get tiresome). But, even when they get to the live shows, they mix up the acts so that you never can tell when she might be on. They do always advertise the week before which acts are coming up the next week, so when I see that, I'll let you all know... as well as Vox. At the very least, these 2 acts will attract fans to the CC genre, which is always good. Jackie Evancho and Forte have done that. I have no idea about Neal E. Boyd, though. That was a long time ago, probably the 3rd season, which would've been 2007. And there was no twitter or anything to help keep him in our minds.

Vox did not make it to the live shows. They sang Bring Him Home. They only showed a tiny bit of it. It sounded good, though a bit noisy, and the Washingtonian went a bit high pitched on the last note, and it didn't work out too well. I'm not that disappointed, since they're not as good as Forte, and too similar to other male classical groups out there. There was a young lady who sang Evita in another Vegas episode, and she did a nice job. However, her Time to Say Goodbye in her audition was a bit cringeworthy, so I'm not sure whether I'm much of a fan yet or not.

Arielle Baril performed on tonight's quarter-final show. She sang Pie Jesu, a very predictable song (I'm almost positive Jackie Evancho sang that on her first live show performance as well). However, her performance was very lovely. She didn't sound nearly as nervous as she did in her audition. I wish I could find a video that showed how her brother influenced her to start singing. He was a choir singer, and she started trying to sing what he sang, and he was very impressed by her talent. So, he started teaching her to sing. She has had no professional vocal training at all, so what you hear from Arielle is pure, natural talent, and nothing sounds forced at all... You can't help but compare that to a certain other young AGT opera singer, who, while she was very impressive for her age, by that time was receiving opera vocal training, and no longer sounded natural at all.
Here is Arielle's performance from tonight's show:

Arielle Baril will be performing on the first semi-final episode on Tuesday. The other classical girl made it through as well, a young woman from Colombia, I think her name is Daniela or something. She sang Bring Him Home (who doesn't sing that these days? ). Now, her voice in itself is actually quite nice; I think I mentioned her Evita was pretty good. However, in this song, while she sang well and with emotion, it's as if her technique changed throughout the song, which made for a very strange effect for me. One moment, she was softer and tender, the next she was louder and more belting. In one song, the technique change was a bit too much. She certainly does have vocal talent, but I think perhaps she needs to work with a vocal coach to help smooth out her technique a bit. One of the judges, Howard Stern, said that she sounded "too broadway". When he mentioned that, I thought, she probably would be better at broadway than opera. In fact, 2 out of 3 of her songs have been from a play. And that louder, belting technique she used in BHH sounded as though it probably would work well in broadway. I bet she'd be more successful there than just putting out CDs, anyway.

LOL That's true. But the male group that didn't make it sang it as well, so it felt like it was being over-used.

Arielle sang Nessun Dorma last night. I'll post a video and results later (though they are probably being revealed live right now).
I thought her performance was very lovely. I was a little concerned at first, because everyone's used to hearing women or men sing it with big, operatic voices. She sang it very well and nicely, but she didn't make it very big, except for the part right near the end, she stepped it up. I kind of wished she'd done that the whole way through, but maybe it's for the best at her age. I wouldn't expect a 12 year old girl to sound like Sarah Brightman. Her voice is much more pleasant to listen to than most "true" opera singers, anyway. However, her less-than-powerful singing has made me slightly concerned whether she will make it or not. And I completely forgot to vote! But, I would've only voted 10 times, so it might not have made much difference either way.

Thanks, Jeff! Unfortunately, Arielle did not make it into the final. I feel bad about not voting, but I doubt my 10 votes would have saved her. The only classical singer left is Daniela, who will be on next week's semi-final episode. I doubt very much that she will make it, either, since she already just barely made it, and only by the judges' save! I'm not sure who will win the show, but these days, I watch the show just for the entertainment of the variety of acts. Whoever wins doesn't really matter to me much. Well, not since Olate Dogs won 3 years ago have I really cared about the winner! They are the only winning act that I ever really was satisfied as the winner. However, there is a funny magician who calls himself Piff the Magic dragon. He's a guy originally from the UK, comes dressed like a dragon, and brings his long-haired chihuahua, named Mr. Piffles. I don't normally care for magic acts, but for him, it's really his character that makes it such an entertaining act, not to mention the addition of the cute little doggy. LOL You'd have to see it to understand, but that's who I've chosen to win this year. Of course, he has to make it into the finale, but I bet he will. Even if Arielle had made it into the finale, I wouldn't have expected her to win. I think the novelty of a Jackie Evancho-type singer has faded a bit, even though I think this girl's voice is much better to listen to.
