I think that is an excellent choice of song, given Christchurch's recent history. Well done Hayley. And thanks again Dave and Ross. That was a special performance. I've heard Hayley sing that song live several times, but it has never come across quite so powerfully before. Martin D Hi Martin and everyone, It was indeed a special performance! At first, I was disappointed that it was such a well known and popular song but when I finally got it together and was able to really listen to it, with surprisingly good audio (Internet!) it rapidly grew on me and now, I love it. Well done Hayley for a marvellous performance and to the childrens' choir who, I think, really enhanced it when called upon to sing. They looked happy, were disciplined and were clearly enjoying it; the more times I play the video, the more I hear them, they should feel very proud of themselves, does anyone know the names of the seven schools involved? I'd like to credit them. The arrangement and production was excellent too, so well done to all involved in that! Best played loud! Cheers, Dave

Best played loud! Cheers, Dave Not loud enough Dave. You are not even 200 miles away. But I still have to play it through my own equipment to hear it! Martin D

Hi everyone
I was hoping for something different at first, but having seen the performance I think it was great and loved the choir. Also Hayley looked great too, loved her outfit and shoes and I think her hair looks really nice like that.

I had thought they were the only ones... or is that an entire school district? My guesses (along with comet and others) for the song were either Bridge Over Troubled Water (BOTW is so much easier, guys ) or You Raise Me Up. I wanted it to be one of these, because I like both songs, and I just heard them live, and thought how wonderful it would be to have a high quality video recording of one of these songs. I wanted it to be something not only beautiful, but familiar. People just tend to respond to familiar songs better than unfamiliar ones. I mean, what else should she have sung? Nothing else from her usual repertoire, recorded or otherwise, would have really fit the occasion as well. Susie, I agree, Hayley looked fabulous. I appreciated both videos, but I can't help but say that the difference in sound quality was so that in watching Ross' video, I thought Hayley was rushing it too much at the beginning. But in Dave's video, it's pretty much perfect. No offense, but I was vastly relieved to find the HWI video.

I did not know about this. Hi Jim, I have just watched a replay of the National Anthems before today's match and it was sung by a choir, probably pre-recorded and audio only. I could not see or hear Hayley or any other individual singer. I am sure Hayley was there and singing it, the little niece too, but not on TV. I seem to recall that's how they did the Rugby World Cup too, all the anthems prerecorded until after the final was won. Cheers, Dave

Dave, one article I saw listed the Redcliffs School. I had thought they were the only ones... or is that an entire school district? Hello Libby! There were about 100 children in the choir, but only 15 were from Redcliffs School. The rest would have been from other schools in the area. www.redcliffs.school.nz/NewsCentre/129/Richard

(But I think you mean that they actually performed it only after the finals started or something? Because if that's the case, even for Semi-finals Elizabeth Marvelly performed the national anthem live, and the other instances too I think)

And Dave another thing, in the official audio recording of You Raise me up as well as your video (which is the same I presume), the higher frequencies are a little too unpleasantly high, making Hayley's timbre sound slightly screechy, and not enough of the bass frequencies that add volume. Which is why Ross's live audio was much better to my ears. It makes a big difference, atleast to me when I have the EQ adjusted to sound right, do you think I can send it to you, and you could probably listen to it and if okay to you, swap the audio?

It's a funny old word all right My gast has been well and truly flabbered by the speed of communications on this wonderful performance by Hayley. Flabbergasted Ooops I seem to be mis-using the word.. I'm sure my gast will get over it..

To be honest, the second verse really surprised me - I never knew it even existed! But I like it a lot; I think it sets Hayley's performance apart from many modern ones that drop it (like Josh Groban did). -Taylor i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

LOL Taylor - modern? Secret Garden, Celtic Woman, and Selah (the first ones I ever heard sing that verse) aren't modern? Teenagers these days. CW didn't record the 2nd verse, but they performed it in concert. Actually, I think it might be on their greatest hits album though, with Alex participating.

There was a choir too, backing her, and they had choirs at, I believe, all the matches for the National Anthems. No idea where I got the prerecorded thing from, confused with something else I guess. But as I mentioned, there were no solo performers for the CWC opening match the other day. I don't really find the 'official' audio to be screechy but I guess re-encoding an already encoded stream doesn't help, I was more concerned about the drop frames on the live stream, to be honest, so I did nothing except normalize the audio to -1 dB on peaks. The balance and eq. is of course a matter for individual taste, and Ross's audio is indeed very good especially for a camcorder, and slightly different. But you cannot replace Youtube audio with your own audio, only with their generic or sponsored stuff, though people who want to change the sound can of course use their tone controls (if they still have them on modern pocket devices!). Libby you are right about Redcliffs School, I have added it to the YT video remarks and our website article, and have asked for anyone else who knows the other school names to post the names so I can add them, too. Cheers, Dave

LOL Taylor. I think what you mean are the most popular versions have not used the 2nd verse... Selah are a Christian group; I first heard their version not too long after I'd first heard Josh Groban's. At first, I actually thought it was their song originally; I had never heard of Secret Garden before (I think they're the first ones to come out with it, since one of the members composed the song, I think). It was not until I saw CW in concert that I heard another performer/group sing the 2nd verse. I'm very glad Hayley decided to include it here. My sister was pleased to hear it, as I predicted. I've had her version stuck in my head nearly all day.
