Just for the record it was England 1 Italy 2. I think if they are going to play Rooney it has to be in the middle or not at all. So now Costa Rica top the group and they looked very impressive in beating Uruguay who we play on Thursday. That is now a must-win game and if Suarez is fit, that won't be easy. Just goes to show there are no easy games anymore as other nations have improved. Since 1996, 46 teams lost their first match and only 4 qualified for the second stage of the tournament. BTW Libby I do apologise if my remark about ladies caused any offence. I didn't think you'd let me get away with it ! BTW Grant. Yes there is little news about Hayley at the moment which is precisely why some of us are talking about other things !

Since 1996, 46 teams lost their first match and only 4 qualified for the second stage of the tournament. Yes indeed Jeff... but 1 of the 4 went on to win the entire tournament! Does that mean that statistically, England's chances of winning the World Cup have now improved to 1 in 4? Must be positive now, must... be......... P o s i t ... i v e... Cheers, Dave

Actually I thought they deserved better.
Statistics show that England had more shots on goal than any of the 14 teams who had played up to that point. And that they were the second best in passes completed (after Italy).
We are not dead yet!

I'm really looking forward to Germany v Portugal today at 5pm. Should be one of the best 1st round matches.

Yes martin but Portugal had a man sent off (Pepe) in the first half after appearing to head-butt Muller. I'm with Adrian Chiles on this one. I too was angrier with the German for his playacting than for what Pepe did in the first place.

Hi Jeff and Martin D.
Two things in the modern game realy annoy me. One is the playacting and feigning injury the other is the waving an imaginary red or yellow card in an attempt to get someone booked. In both cases I would give a card to the person doing it.
Stupid though Pepe was to react there is no way that could be called a head butt. If you have been head butted you don't jump up like Muller did.

Hello folks! I reckon these soccer stars from Dublin would make pork scratchings of the England team! England could beat the Texas Turkeys by shouting "Cranberry Sauce!" Richard

Yes and nothing can be taken for granted. Last night the reigning champions Spain went out of the competition after losing to Chile 2-0, their second loss.

I'm afraid it looks like die! England lost 2-1. But amazingly, I'm told it is still possible for England to qualify if they win their llast match and Italy win both of thier remaining matches. I suppose then it comes down to goal difference. Martin D

Martin D Yep, if England beat Costa Rica by at least two goals, or possibly even one goal (depending on the Italy match scores), and if Italy win both remaining matches, England will qualify for the next round in 2nd place. There are two many 'ifs' in that statement for my liking, though I am currently a temporary supporter of the Italy football team! Cheers, Dave
