Hi Libby i also liked Yulia's choice of music.... she is so artistic! How she traced circles in the ice at the start and end of her routine, or how she would gaze at an unseen star. I couldn't find video of her skating to the theme to Schindlers list in the team free skate or her debut skate in Sochi.

There are videos of her programs from the European championships in Budapest late last month, which she won.
Here's her short program (she's tracing a heart, according to the commentator the other night):
And here's her Schindler's List program:

Apologies for the confusion, Libby! There are several different spellings of Yulia's name in English, so here it is in Russian: Юлия Вячеславовна ЛипницкаяYou can read more about her here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_LipnitskaiaI doubt if she uses her middle name Viacheslavovna very often! Richard

Thanks Jeff! From past experience with the BBC iPlayer, I suspect the video may only be available in the UK. Richard

What video was Robin Cousins talking over? I'm familiar with him as an Olympic champion (a few years before my time, of course), but I didn't know he was a commentator. Not that it should be surprising that he would be.

Speaking of ice skating, this just had to be done: And if you haven't seen the original: :je -Taylor P.S.- If you don't know what Nutella (Noo-tell-uh) is, it's a delicious chocolate flavoured, hazelnut spread that's very popular over here.

Hello Taylor! I've seen Nutella, but I haven't tried it. They were serving it on crepes at Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. I see it's manufactured by Ferrero SpA, who also make Ferrero Rocher and other well-known chocolate and hazelnut products: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NutellaRichard

Not that it should be surprising that he would be. I meant Robin doesn't talk over the skating as much as the commentator in the video from Budapest. Too many sports commentators like the sound of their own voice. Robin understands that viewers want to hear the music as well as watch the skating !

Yes, I think he does a good job. His co-presenter is Sue Barker, who of course was a tennis player. Nobody ever explains properly how the scoring works for these events though, or what those numbers you sse on the bottom of the screen actually mean and how they are arrived at. Still, I enjoy watching it.

That doesn't answer my question, so let me re-phrase: What broadcast does Robin Cousins do commentary for? That should be much clearer. LOL

Thanks. I've been wondering who the British commentator for Eurosport is, if he's any former UK skater, so that's one reason I was asking. I really like that commentator, because he says such nice things about everybody. In particular, I loved it when he said recently that American Jeremy Abbott "epitomizes everything I love about men's figure skating", and I thought that was a wonderful thing to say, and a huge compliment for Jeremy. He really is one of the most beautiful men skaters out there these days; his interpretation of music is beautiful and exquisite, yet never flashy, over-done, or flamboyant. He's one of the few skaters, male or female, who can give me chills to watch him. I'm sad he had such a bad fall in his short program. If he'd left out the quad, he probably would have done just fine, and would have placed much higher. But there's such pressure on the guys to do at least one, maybe 2 quads, in their programs. That's why I enjoy ice dancing so much more than singles or pairs. Because there are no jumps, which generally means nobody falls. The ones who fall are often the least-skilled dancers out there. Also, I just enjoy watching dancing and interpreting of music that I don't care as much about jumping. So, for the most part, ice dancers are scored by how skilled they are at ice dancing, rather than whether they get nervous and fall or not. It's fun to see jumps sometimes, but more often I find it too nerve-wracking when it's a skater you're really rooting for. Even the strongest skaters have their bad moments, as was glaringly evident during the men's free skate on Friday. The gold and silver medallists both made several blunders in their free skates, but they still got their medals because of how well they did in the short program, not to mention their high component (artistic interpretation) scores. If you want to know why I love ice dancing so much, then watch this video; it's the best ice dancing out there these days, and they are the likely gold medallists tomorrow: It shows that skating without jumps can be equally exciting, if not more so.

I find the jumps to be unpredictable in a skating program. The ice dancing (Sunday's short dance) was great to watch live. Just seeing these skaters really interpret movement and music.
I do hope Charlie and Meryl do well in their final. Medals for Team USA have been so unpredictable; US athletes favored to win have been "upstaged" by lesser-known teammates. Good examples of this would be in the half-pipe and slopestyle.
The Sochi 2014 app is really good. One can see any result and see the points, deductions, etc.

Hello Libby! That's an incredible performance by Meryl and Charlie, so they should be the hot favourites at Sochi. The music is from 'Scheherazade' by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Richard
