Hi everyone,
This thread is for all versions of Winter Magic, to discuss how well we think the album will do and how well it does do, when we know. I've kept it separate so we can find the information at a later date, which would otherwise get buried in the main discussion threads, or even the main charts thread.
General discussion about the album content, songs etc. should continue in the other Winter Magic threads. I have linked to this thread from the Charts & Sales board, where brief details of chart progress will still appear, as with all other Hayley CDs. This thread will eventually be moved to the Charts & Sales board, probably next year.
I intend to update this first post with a summary of the chart and sales performance of Winter Magic from time to time, as confirmed information becomes available.

Japan: There is no information yet about how Winter Magic is doing in the Japanese charts except that it was not in last week's Top 50 (the first chart it could have appeared in). Although Hayley is in Japan, she has not yet started her concert tour so the situation should improve soon. UK: The competition that previously existed on the current UK release date of Winter Magic seems to have been removed! Here is a list of classical crossover release dates from Hayley's main competition for supermarket shelf space (List is courtesy of ManicKangaroo at Haven forum. ) Blake – Together [12th Oct] Only Men Aloud – Band Of Brothers [12th Oct]
Katherine Jenkins - Believe [26th Oct]
Bryn Terfel – Bad Boys [2nd Nov] Katherine Jenkins – The Ultimate Collection [2nd Nov]
Aled Jones – The Ultimate Collection [23rd Nov] Alfie Boe - Franz Lehár: Love Was A Dream [23rd Nov] Camilla Kerslake - Camilla Kerslake [23rd Nov] Fron Male Voice Choir – Voices Of The Valley: Down Memory Lane [23rd Nov] Susan Boyle - I Dreamed A Dream [23rd Nov] The Priests – Harmony [23rd Nov]
Andrea Bocelli – My Christmas [30th Nov] The Band Of The Coldstream Guards – Heroes [30th Nov] Faryl Smith – Wonderland [30th Nov] Hayley Westenra – Winter Magic [30th Nov] Il Divo - An Evening With Il Divo [30th Nov] Rhydian – O Fortuna [30th Nov] If anyone notices any changes to the release dates, please tell. But for now, Decca seem to have flexibility to release on either 9th. or the current 16th. November... the two Mondays following Festival of Remembrance and Children in Need. This could be really good news for Hayley is involved in one, may well be involved in both, and both events are very high profile. I think this may encourage Decca to try a lot harder with this release than the last few. Dave *Updated

Hi Dave,
I've been watching Winter Magic on the Japanese Itunes charts. Good news is that it appears to be picking up a LOT of steam. It is currently at number 36 on the Itunes Pop charts --- impressive as it was as low as number 80 only a few days ago and a few days before that not in the top 100.
So the promo must be working! Will be interesting to see how it goes now that the concerts have started.
Hayley Sings Japanese songs is also at number 73.

Hello Dave,
Where did you find all of the other album release dates?
I think Faryl is Hayley's main competition. It's good that WM is being released a few weeks before her Wonderland.

Hi Nicola, I did say In the Classical Crossover sub-forum there. I keep on top of them too, from my copy of Music Week - but it was handy to be able to copy the list. Looks like Hayley has been neatly slotted in between Katherine and Faryl... also with Festival of Remembrance (and perhaps Children in Need) in mind, too. If Decca are willing to take a chance with more TV advertising than last time, also some supermarket "persuasion" shall we say then Hayley should do OK with Winter Magic in the UK. Somewhere in between R o D and Treasure in sales, I think but I am sure that Decca can push it above Treasure and still make a nice profit, if they try. Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave,
I agree. This is an exceptional album. It could take off with the right promotion. I could suggest perhaps releasing a single off it, perhaps Peace Shall Come or River. Then get Sir Terry, who must know about Hayley because of her involvement in Children in Need, to play it on his Radio 2 show. What he did for Eva Cassidy and Katie Melua could also be done for Hayley.
I will wait and see what happens when Winter Magic is released in the UK. If it is nothing, Sir Terry will hear from me.
With the right promotion it could really sell. To my mind this is the most commercial Christmas Album since the well known Mowtown one in the sixties. But it needs to be publicised.

Have found another crossover album released on the same day as Hayley's. Camilla Kerslake's debut album. She is money behind her campaign by the looks of it.

Have found another crossover album released on the same day as Hayley's. Camilla Kerslake's debut album. She is money behind her campaign by the looks of it. Hi Nicola, As mentioned in the Camilla thread, it seems that could be 16 or 23 November. I'll add it to the above list as 23rd for the moment (but Camilla has a lot of competition unless they do move it forward a week!). As it's another record company, Decca won't have any control over that of course but it seems to me that they could easily move Hayley forward a week anyway (closer to Festival of Remembrance). Cheers, Dave Edit, Music Week in fact say 16 November now so I'll update the table to that. There are so many major releases at that time of year that I don't really think one more (Camilla) will make much difference to Hayley or any of the others, Katherine Jenkins will already be filling shelves anyway, with two albums! I think Il Divo are releasing something on the 30th November as well: An Evening with Il DivoSusan Boyle's album is out on the 23rd November too. Although Leona Lewis has nothing to do with crossover, her album release is also on the 16th - whether that will have an effect or not, I don't know. Enya is also releasing an album on the 23rd November. Another Best of. Knowing this as I was compiling my own list on my forum, lol. Oh (this is this like the third time I have edited), Rhydian's album is called 'Our Homeland'.

Hi Nicola,
The Susan Boyle album is basically a reality TV thing so I don't think it will impact much on the established classical crossover singers, though it may well stop some other pop hopefuls from getting the no. 1 they were hoping for! It's going to be huge.
I would expect Faryl to sell in much larger numbers than Hayley too, for similar reality TV reasons - but she will sell far fewer than Susan Boyle who has had stratospheric amounts of hype and is still in the Cowell fold, unlike Faryl who chose Decca.
Camilla Kerslake, well just don't know about her. She may or may not do better than Hayley, I don't have a strong feeling for that either way.
There is quite good news for Hayley so far at Amazon UK, she has been gradually climbing their rankings and is currently at no. 300 overall, compared to no. 2,132 for Camilla and no. 368 for Faryl. Annoyingly, Amazon are stubbornly and consistently failing to move Hayley up the "Pre-release" rankings for Nov 16 and beyond, Faryll and Camilla are listed several places higher even though their Amazon pre-orders have clearly been less than Hayley's for the last several days. It is annoying.

Copied/moved from Winter Magic - UK & US version thread by Dave ...Amazon are now showing the release date as 30th November HERE although HMV now have it at 23rd November! HERE So confusing! According to Nicola's very helpful site ( http://www.classical-crossover.co.uk) these are the releases of other artists on those days. If it is the case that Hayley is moving to the 23rd or the 30th, there's some decent competition on those dates.
Perhaps it was thought that competing with Camilla would be a bad idea?
November 16th:
Hayley Westenra - Winter Magic Camilla Kerslake - Self-titled Giorgia Fumanti - Magnificat (17th)
November 23rd:
The Priests - Harmony Aled Jones - Ultimate Collection The Fron Male Voice Choir - Memory Lane Enya - The Very Best of Enya
November 30th:
Andrea Bocelli - My Christmas Rhydian - Our Homeland Faryl Smith - Wonderland Il Divo - A Night With Il Divo The Band Of The Coldstream Guards – Heroes [/blockquote][/quote]

...If it is the case that Hayley is moving to the 23rd or the 30th, there's some decent competition on those dates. Perhaps it was thought that competing with Camilla would be a bad idea? Hi Jillian, I don't think Camilla will be affecting the issue, it is still uncertain how well she will do... and she's no Faryl or Susan Boyle. I expressed my thoughts about this a while ago in the first Winter Magic thread: Myself, I'm quite pleased with the release date, it's well placed to catch the pre-Christmas gift market that will then be starting to get in full swing. A week later might be even better but of course, Decca will have many high profile artists to juggle, all fighting to get the "perfect" release date and wanting to avoid clashes with each other. The challenge is to be high in the chart on December 1st (2 weeks later) because then, you are "locked in" to the manic December sales rush due to far fewer new releases in December.
Supermarket prominence in release week is the key to a successful Christmas album, let's hope Hayley achieves that...
As the rest of the Christmas releases are announced, not only by Decca, there may be some movement in the release date as everyone jostles for position, this happens every year. So 23 or 30 november would normally be ideal... IF Decca can persuade the supermarkets to give Winter Magic (UK) a good position on their shelves. But what we didn't know back in August is that Hayley would be appearing at the Festival of Remembrance (and possibly take some part in Children in Need Night the week after?) and that may have altered the thinking. But they've moved the release date back and not forward, as I'd have expected so now, I am confused. I think we'll just have to assume that Decca know what they are doing this time and have the necessary promotional plans in place to support a 23 or 30 November release date. Perhaps they are going to use the inevitable jump in Hayley's prerelease rankings after Festival of Remembrance to persuade the supermarkets to increase their advance orders, who knows? Perhaps they have already persuaded them to increase their advance orders and they need an extra week or two to press them all? i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Dave

Like you Dave, I hope these people know what they are doing. That they have a great album on their hands is without question, but how well it does is much more down to marketing strategy and promotion than the merits of the music I'm sad to say. I'm afraid that is the way it is these days.

That can't be the case, as Camilla's album has been pushed back to the 23rd. Reason being that they have decided to tack on a second disc with some Christmas songs. Hayley had the 16th November date all to herself.
Rhydian has changed his album to 'O Fortuna'.
