Thanks for the link, Jim! That video was clearly recorded at Venus Fort on 30 July 2013, so I'll post it in the relevant thread and also on our Facebook page. Richard

My copy is at the local mail office. I have got to pay VAT and a Royal Mail charge 0f £8.00 for collecting the VAT.
Total £11.39 OUCH!!!! That alone is more than I paid for the UK edition.

Cheers Grant It's not the VAT I object to it's the exorbitant Royal Mail charge. That is far more than it costs them. Airlines etc. were recently forced to reduce their surcharges for credit card payments in line with what it costs. The same should be done about this.

Well, at least you two have heard something! But I agree, charges like that are disgusting and we ought to make a lot of noise about it and shame them.
In the past purchases from CDJapan have appeared in 4 or 5 days. It is more than twice as long for this one now. Someone had cottoned on to another money making racket by the sound of it.
Why should we pay VAT on articles that were not bought in this country? I was on holiday in France, and Andorra recently. I bought a number of items and payed VAT at French rates of French purchases, but nothing on the Andorra ones, and Andorra is outside the EU. Charging VAT on imports is a racket, pure and simple. No value has been added in the UK or EU.

I don't see how that would work. Won't they eventually discover that the address doesn't match your credit card? Or are you using a credit card? I'm confused. Someone suggested to me to do that in order to download the World in Union songs from Play.com. Well, I did, and I got the songs, but they eventually rejected my credit card when I tried to get another song a separate time. I won't be pulling that stunt again.

Hi Libby, You don't use a credit card - you purchase a Japan ITunes gift card. You're right - iTunes Japan only accepts Japanese credit cards, so you can't use foreign ones. Cheers, Jillian

Well, I've had my extortion card through the letterbox this morning. The charge is the same as Grant's £11.39. No mention of VAT though, they call it a "Customs Charge" and it has the same £8 handling fee. And if I don't pay up within 18 "caledendar days" (I don't know what other sort of days there are) they will return the item to sender.
Our state is becoming more and more insdistinguishable from the Mafia. Grr...

Hi Susie,
It's a rip off basically. I collected mine from the depot, and it did say £3.35 VAT on the package, but who in the UK has added any value is a mystery. The remaining £8 is what Royal Mail charge for collecting the £3.35 as I understand it.
Still, I've got it now, and very nice it is too, with much more sleeve information than the UK version, different pictures and a lyric booklet. Hope to play it when there is nobody in bed!

Hi Martin, Susie and everyone
The way I understand it is that any item purchased from abroad - how ever it comes into the UK - is subject to customs duty if it is over a certain value. Adding VAT is a way of collecting that duty and the handler, in this instance the Post Office, is entitled to charge a reasonable fee for collecting the VAT/duty. I think we are all agreed that £8 is exorbitant for this!
In the past, checking packages arriving in the UK has been a random exercise and you will see in previous threads that purchasers of Hayleys other Japanese albums have randomly been caught out by this - I have had to pay the fee once before but this time it looks as though things have changed and all duty payable packages are being charged.
Best wishes Grant

Best wishes Grant Hi Grant, That is exactly as I understood the law except that I thought the "certain value" was £18. On £18 the VAT would be £3.60. As I was only charged £3.39 it seems that has changed as well. I suppose their is nothing we can do. So, I think, we will have to let it drop. It is pity we can't do anything about the Royal Mail charges.
