It is a great song. The only negative thing is that it not really in Hayley's genre or general repertoire, as per the "Other Music" board description. However, there is a bit of a lull, so for now it can stay.

However, there is a bit of a lull, so for now it can stay. Well Hayley does sing a bit of folk music, I figured many of her fans could enjoy this. In my opinion it shares some elements of songs like Summer Fly or Scarborough Fair -Rory

I honestly don't think there is anything that isn't in Hayley's genre - she doesn't have one. And she has had a go at just about everything I can think of except heavy Rock! She would probably do that too if the opportunity arose. Anyway, I've always liked Hayley's forays into Folk, and I would like to hear her do more of it.

Honestly I would love some day to hear Hayley try some hard rock tunes. Not only is the music different from her forte, but it requires a different side of her voice that I don't think we've ever heard before. I wonder if she can produce a rasp lol. And another reason I chose the Civil Wars was for the harmonies. I've always wanted more harmonies in Hayley's music, and I like the idea of her doing more duets - perhaps with Sophie as we discussed in another thread. -Rory

Hello Martindn.
I quite agree with you that Hayley does not have a "genre". This is what gives her wide appeal and certainly one of the aspects that make me a fan. The disadvantage of course is that it requires more impetus to spread the word meaningfully across a wide audience span than to be a genre singer.
I'm inclined to the view that Hayley "simply" (and its not that simple really) has set out to enjoy herself and see what she can do with her talents. The beauty of her is that she is not a performer but a person simply being herself who performs.
This gives her problems. In one aspect the music industry is fragmenting and diversifying allowing for narrower specialities which can be cost-effective. Conversely, it fragments the ease with which a broad "mass" release may be most cost-effectively promoted. She is geared to a major "across the board" patron, can it cost-effectively handle the promotion of an artist across a range of genres?
On the other hand one could argue that Hayley is her own genre, yet in a way her gentleness counters the hard-headedness needed for self-promotion but business-wise, I think she does have a hard head. It is tuned to her business mode but not her artiste mode.
I am also beginning to be concerned that we have no news of intended activity. This hopefully is 'simply' because she has decided to take time out for concentration on personal matters which may well include time thinking through her next strategy. It is a convenient time to do this after ten years but time is slipping by.

Martin D I would love to hear Hayley try Operatic Rock, I know that much! (Like Sonata Arctica, for anyone unsure what that is!). You need a really powerful Classical voice to sing that stuff, and I think Hayley would sound amazing. Have to agree that Hayley doesn't really have a genre as such, too. Hard to argue that someone who has sung both Shenandoah (Beautifully) and Jolene has NO Country influences. She sings Folk, Pop and Classical all the time. She has sung Queen songs (Rock!), hymns and Xmas carols. She's performed show tunes, film music and... Yeah, let's just say the number of genres she has NOT at least dabbled in is very small. I sometimes wonder if we have seen even a tenth of what Hayley is actually capable of...

Totally agree with that, Rory!
One of the things I really like about Hayley as an artist is that she is never afraid to experiment.

I would actually love if she did something like operatic rock, although we shouldn't get our hopes up! lol anything a bit more edgy or unexpected would be fabulous, although I would also really just love to hear more of her own music -Rory

Absolutely, Rory. I keep hoping she'll do Operetta too, at some point. Gilbert & Sullivan especially have some amazing songs I think she would excel at.

Hi Rory and everyone
I'm glad there is a thread for the civil wars, I think Hayley could sing this type of music, and she does do folk type music. I love the melodies of the Civil Wars songs such as 20 years, ces't la mort, I've go this friend, their cover of I want you back is really good too. I'm sure Hayley also mentioned that she is a fan of the xx, I only know of them through Birdy and have not heard many of their songs, but I think they come under the folk category too. I think it would be great for Hayley to collaborate with these types of artists.

Been on this one lately. Absolutely beautiful song. I'm not sure if it's possible for two people to harmonize better or more emotively than these two. Enjoy. -Rory

That's a great one Rory, I also like My Father's Father for the harmonies on the word 'home'- so simple and so effective.

They have a way of just pushing the notes at you, just great dynamics overall. And even though most if not all of their songs have such simple arrangements, they never leave me wanting more - they make more than the most of what they've got -Rory
