Got a singer, songwriter or musician you think Hayley would probably enjoy? Name it and give a brief explanation. I'll list a few to get us started:
1. Lana Del Rey. A mesmerizing new singer about to break big, Lana is the most talked-about, up-and-coming chanteuse in years. Hayley might enjoy her unique vocals and retro-stylings.
2. Judy Collins. She must have heard of her by now, but few singers past or present are in Hayley's league talent-wise as much as Judy Collins.
3. The Jacques Brell songbook. This would be magical for Hayley to consider, especially songs like "Sons Of" and "Mareike".

Hello Steve and everybody! As this thread specifically involves Hayley, I've moved it from the Other Music board. Richard

It's hard to know for sure what she'd like and what she wouldn't, but I think she might like Brandi CarlileBrandi is a local artist. She grew up in a town very, very close to where I live! I could get there in 20 min. But she is famous around America, and even in some other countries. People have even sung her song The Story on American Idol before. I guess her genre is sort of folk, and they also describe it as indie/rock, although I'm not entirely sure what indie is, as I've seen that term used for Grace Bawden and Siobhan Owen, and they're classical/Celtic. Brandi has a really good voice. She sounds really nice in some of her higher notes. I mostly like female singers with somewhat higher voices rather than low, but I enjoy her lower tone, too, which she seems to use more, so I wouldn't call her a soprano. It's kind of hard to describe her voice, because I can't think of any singers that really sound like her; you'd have to hear for yourself. But it's not just her voice I think Hayley would like, it's her original songs, and way she sings from her heart, or her gut, or whatever the mood of the song is. Elton John actually helped write one of the songs on her latest album! One of her best songs is on her second album, called The Story. But her latest album, Give Up the Ghost, is a better album. The songs I like on that album are Touching the Ground, Dreams, That Year, Dying Day, Pride and Joy, and Looking Out.

Hi Libby,
I might be wrong but I always thought indie meant independent, ie an artist that is not signed to a major record label.

That's exactly what Indie means, Martin, yes The artists are independent of the larger labels, hence they are 'Indie' and the smaller labels tend to describe themselves as 'Indie'. Applied to a musical sound, it usually means 'anything that isn't all that commercial' - part of the expectation that the major labels will sign all the mainstream chart acts (Not always true, you will note! ).

Umm, but Brandi is signed to Sony, so that can't be the only definition. Aha! Here you go. The songs of hers that I like I wouldn't really call rock, except maybe a couple, but the songs don't resemble any rock song I've ever heard. I think it's because they're not purely rock. I think they're just influenced by a mixture of genres. Anyway, I think I misunderstood the topic. I thought we were supposed to come up with singers/artists that we thought Hayley herself might like, as far as just listening to, not necessarily covering their songs or collaborating with. In that case, I don't think Hayley should sing any of Brandi's songs; I don't know if they'd all really suit her. A collaboration wouldn't hurt, but probably wouldn't really help, either, and I don't see it happening anytime soon, anyway. But I do think Hayley would appreciate Brandi Carlile as an artist. She has an original voice, and sings original songs, and I think Hayley appreciates artists like that. I'm sure she would like Brandi's style of music, too. Also, Brandi has a raw sound in most of her songs, I think, so there's another thing to win Hayley over, I guess, since she's just learning to use a rawness in her own singing. Hayley needs to collaborate with people who are already really, really famous, like Michael Buble and Josh Groban. And we already know she's interested in working with them. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif But then, Hayley's collaboration with Andrea Bocelli doesn't seem to have done that much for Hayley, at least not worldwide. Oh, and I've also thought that Lara Fabian's voice has some similarities to Hayley's sound, although I've only heard a few of her songs. But it was enough to make me think Hayley would cover them very well.

Hayley has a pretty diverse taste, so I'd just do what I usually do when recommending new artists to people: go with who I think is really good and who I'm listening to recently. As Hayley is in the music business, I'd also assume I was wasting my time recommending fairly well established artists, as she is bound to know them herself. But I'd still recommend Nathan Gunn to her (Even though she probably knew about him before I did) on the grounds that I want the two of them to duet! Recommends would be: Tiffany Page Edei Sarah Solovay Lauren Alexander Broken Souls Alliance I'd second Lana Del Rey, but Hayley must have heard of her, by now. She's everywhere in Britain, this year. Same may well be true of Amelia Lily, but as the only contestant on X Factor ever to actually have the X-Factor, she deserves a mention regardless! I'd probably throw in Alexz Johnson, too, on the grounds that a Canadian Folk artist might be sufficiently obscure One thing that would actually fascinate me would be knowing who Hayley herself would recommend...

Another singer I thought of was Christina Perri. I bet Hayley's heard of her, since I remember seeing her album near the top of the UK charts months ago. I haven't heard many of her songs, either, but the ones I heard I liked, especially the one called Arms, which is sort of folk/pop-sounding to me. I assume UK pop radios play music that are at the top of the charts, and I'm guessing Hayley might listen to the radio once in a while. And if they play popular music in stores she shops at, then she probably hears songs that way, too.

I'd always recommend Within Temptation. I'd hope Hayley would hear Sharon Den Adel's voice and be inspired (I think Hayley and Sharon have a very similar vocal style). If Hayley does any covers again, I'd always hope for a Within Temptation cover. Such beautiful ballads. <3 www.youtube.com/watch?v=PojE1LTswV0&ob=av2n

I can't think of an artist at the moment, but it has been a long while since we heard Hayley sing any Maori songs. I always did like those, and I think she should record a few more. May I suggest "Akoako O Te Rangi"?

What about World in Union? But yes, more Maori songs would be good. I think it would be nice if she wrote some songs in Maori too, besides the more traditional ones, like she did for On the Wings of Time, but one that would be on all versions of a main album.

Sorry, forgot about that one. But I was talking about songs that were more "traditional" per say (though I do really like "World In Union").
