I didn't see the game after all. Hayley's tweets regarding the subject lead me to believe US didn't win, but I couldn't really tell. I can look it up, I guess. I doubt the World in Union song was televised anyway, even if it was played at the game.

Hi Libby, Yes, the US lost by a score of 22-10. But, in reality, it was probably the best match they've ever played. They played absolutely fantastic defense, and put forth max effort throughout the entire game. If there is any such thing as a moral victory, this was one. Ireland is a top-tier rugby nation, and the US generally gets steamrolled by such teams. To only lose by 12 points is very good. Their next match will be against Russia on Thursday morning beginning at 12:30 AM our time. This is the match they've been looking forward to the most, as Russia is more on par with them. As far as Hayley's "World In Union", unfortunately NBC is not using it. They seem to have their own instrumental theme music which is loosely based on Holst's "The Planets", which is where "World in Union" comes from. Martin, excellent job on the breakdown of the pool tie-breaking procedures by the way!!! So far, the All Blacks, Australia and South Africa look like the toughest teams, which should come as no surprise since they are ranked 1-2-3 in the IRB world rankings. I'm pulling for four different teams in this order: USA (my homeland), All Blacks (my favorite team), Scotland (my paternal ancestral homeland), Ireland (my maternal ancestral homeland). Not sure that anyone cares about that, but I just felt like sharing. Haha. Matt

It was quite common for the Irish farm labourers to assist the Scots during harvest time. Apart from their obvious associations as demonstrated in Braveheart.

Haha Comet, I love the Irishman character in that movie!!! All the men in the battle scene on the Scottish side of course (Yes the mooners) were members of the Irish army. That's what they do when they are not invading other countries with snowballs, mudpies and bottles of potín (hooch). I think most of the movie was made in Ireland. and to keep it on topic, yes, I was pleased the Irish team won. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhoooooooeeiiikkkkkk

Thanks for the info, Matt. I hope the US does better against Russia, too. But the fact that our country seems to pay little attention to our team seems to say that our team isn't that great. I wasn't expecting NBC to play the song in the intro, but I was hoping the song might be heard in the background. The articles did say the song would be played at the matches. Hey, it's great that ITV in the UK are using the song, but it only seems appropriate that the NZ networks do the same thing. Are they playing it, or even mentioning it, at all? It would seem ridiculous for them not to at all.

I bet the song IS played at the matches, but probably wouldn't be heard on TV because the networks tend to spend as much time discussing things in the studio as they can, and only show what's happening in the stadium while there is action on the field. The only other things they DO show are the national anthems right before the kickoff, and the hakas of the island nations.

What I have noticed at the game I went to in Dunedin plus some games I have seen on TV in NZ is that they play the song about 20 minutes after the game has finished ( I haven't seen it yet).

Hey everyone, Just finished watching the USA vs. Russia match. The USA came away victors by a score of 13-6!!! <Hooray!!!> They scored their only try during a fast-paced first half. After a torrential downpour during halftime, the slick field conditions slowed things down a bit. Quite a few missed penalties by both sides kept the score down as well. All in all, a good win for the American side. Now they get a nice rest, and they will surely need it, as their next opponents are the #2 ranked team in the world, the Wallabies of Australia. That match will be on 23 September. The hosts, the mighty All Blacks are back in action tonight when they take on Japan. Unfortunately, the AB's will be without their fearless captain Richie McCaw due to a strained calf muscle. He should be healed up in time for their following big match with France. Now for the highlight of tonight's game!! I'm happy to report that Hayley's 'World In Union' IS played over the stadium speakers shortly after the match concludes, just as Ross had mentioned above. I know this because following the game, the network came back from a commercial break and were about to interview the winning captain. There was a panoramic view of the stadium on the screen for a good 15 seconds, nobody was talking, and all I could hear was Hayley's glorious voice being piped over Taranaki Stadium's speakers!!! Gave me chills I must say. Hope everyone is doing great. GO ALL BLACKS!!! Matt

I heard so many penalties are being missed due to the wind. Well, that's the players' excuse anyway !

Hi Jeff, I wouldn't doubt the wind plays into it some, but a lot of these guys should be used to it, right? And the kickers for England and Argentina certainly have no excuse for their miss-fest the other day. That game was played at the new Otago Indoor Stadium! Haha. Matt

Hey Libby, The USA vs. Russia match was on Universal Sports, which is an affiliate of NBC. I'm fortunate that my cable provider recently added it to their channel lineup. I don't know how widely available it is on other service providers lineups, or on satellite services, but it would definitely be worth checking out since most of the RWC matches broadcast here in the States will be on it. NBC will be broadcasting the Final, so at least all of America will have the opportunity to see Hayley sing there. Matt

Hey everyone,
An impressive win for the All Blacks tonight, 83-7 over Japan. The AB's were firing on all cylinders, racking up 13 tries. The only bump was missing quite a few conversions, but considering they were without their top scorer Dan Carter, that wasn't too surprising. Nice touch before the match, as they held a moment of silence for the victims of the New Zealand and Japan earthquakes. And once again, Hayley's 'World In Union' was played in the stadium following the match. It could be heard on the broadcast during the interviews with the coaches. Up next for the All Blacks on 24 September, their toughest group-play match, against a team that has given them fits in the past, France.
Three UK sides will be in action this weekend as Wales battles Samoa, England takes on Georgia, and Ireland tangles with the Wallabies of Australia.
