Hi everyone, We can now discuss in this thread Hayley's Concert at Dunedin - Regent Theatre on Thursday 24 November 2011. This is part of the Hayley's NZ Paradiso tour, as published by Stuff.co.nz and several other major NZ media sites today. Please discuss anything about the tour as a whole in the main thread entitled NZ Tour 2011 - General thread, thanks! Dave

Dunedin has many old buildings such as the Historic Rail Station and the old Town Hall in the Octagon And then there is the Regent Theatre where Hayley played The foyer is very beautiful with a lovely ceiling And marble stairs down to the stalls The roof of the theatre has a big chandelier and one big upstairs circle I am in the front row centre but there is an orchestra pit in front of the stage so it feels like you are 3 rows back. Graeme and Marianne were about 3 rows back. The set-list hasn't changed all tour and since it was my last concert I didn't take many photos as I wanted to concentrate on Hayley's singing. The 2 photos I did take were during Summer-Fly:- The Diamond Quartet (Note the 2nd violinist is playing his violin like a guitar). One funny moment in the concert was when Hayley introduced Chase for the Bocelli duet. Chase said "I am sorry if you were expecting Andrea" and Hayley replied "Who needs Andrea when you can have Chase". The crowd enjoyed the show and we got the 3 encores but no standing ovation ( the last 2 shows had a lot of elderly people). After the show there was a reasonable crowd at the signing. Here Hayley has just arrived I thanked Hayley for the wonderful 7 concerts I went too. Here is a picture from the Otago Daily Times (there will be a review tomorrow)

Many thanks again, Ross! I've mentioned on our Facebook page that this was your last concert of the New Zealand tour, but I bet you wish you were going to the other three now. Best wishes, Richard

Superb pictures of Dunedin and theatre, thank you Ross. I bet you must be feeling pretty gutted at going home. I always do after leaving Hayley but with a tour as well you obviously have had a great time. Thanks for the trouble to share.

Hi Ross,
Again that was fantastic, thanks for you efforts. I'm sure you feel that all that travelling was worth it. There is only one Hayley, and her concerts in NZ seem few and far between these days. To cover 7 ut of 10 was wonderful.

Hi everyone. I find the Bouman review interesting for several reasons.
It is a light and seemingly balanced review. I wonder to what extent it has been muted in the light of recent reviewing controversy. She used the word "pallid" which is almost a synonym for "bland" but the word was used in the context of comparison with something described as most definitely not pallid. That gives the word a wholly different meaning. I sense a certain nervousness. Is it possible that reviewers are now suddenly scared stiff of the job of reviewing Hayley Westenra?
It is inevitable, in fact arguably essential, that a programme will be varied. There will be songs of intense passion and songs with less passion, that are delivered like a flock of gossamer upon the air, lightly, or that is how they should be presented, either for themselves or because the mood of the artist, either for that song or in contrast to the song before or intended after, fits the mood of the whole. "Pallid" is not necessarily a criticism, more an observation but I gain the feeling the writer intends it as a criticism but feels she is treading dangerous ground.
In my turn, I merely observe and say the observation lights an amber warning. However, this is probably leading us into the debate of Hayley's delivery balance between what she wants to give and what the audience expects. This should be a subject that is (and I am sure it is) continually under review.
Bouman described her voice as "reasonably appealing light soprano". I think that is the first time I've read a condition to simply describing Hayley as a "soprano". It is fair comment. There are many currently active sopranos doing the rounds and why should one appeal more than others? We have debated here previously that there is a limited availability, within the understanding of the average punter, of material to show a difference. Therefore comparisons hang on individual nuances, leading into personal subjective choices. Her voice has strengthened over the years but "light' is an important aspect to bear in mind in what she handles and how. Perhaps this is why she goes down so well in Japan? I have already commented that her linguistic abilities are not as appreciated as they should be and that perhaps she should include her Japanese repertoire. Think on it. "Pallid", "light", Japanese. Horses for courses?
On the other hand, mulling further, one could simply conclude the writer's personal preference is for the more upbeat than the placid genre. Hayley does placid with deep subtleties of nuance which not everyone is able to comprehend and I have in the past observed that if she wanted to, I reckon the lady could sing the blues!
This is a review deserving serious thought.

At last I've reached my 3rd & last concert. Since we were several rows from the stage, focusing was less accurate & blurring more likely so apologies for any quality loss: Hayley had no trouble seeing me however. She scanned around...Ah, there's Graeme
