Society is also about understanding and helping others, I thought. The power of one is not stronger. As to the amount of sympathy I have for her - I'll wait for the cause of death to be confirmed. Some sources say that her death was brought about going cold turkey from alcohol. I believe, also, that she did kick her habit during her hiatus away from music, though I think drugs defeated her again. All in all I think Amy was a girl that made the wrong decisions, and spent a lot of her short life trying to break free from them. She was having an ongoing battle with drugs - she hadn't given in to them completely.
I've known people in my personal life that have had drugs problems, and I know how the drug problems were caused. They got out of the vicious cycle. It took a decade for both of them, but they did it. Amy could have done this, but she was unfortunate enough to not be given sufficient time. That is sad, but it's also something she brought onto herself.
I find you harsh and judgemental, Steven, as always, but we are all different people and we all have different views. In your case, it means you have more sympathy for those like Eva, and that's well deserved and understandable.

Thanks to Jeff for backing me, and I agree that what happened to Eva Cassidy (early death from melanoma) was a much bigger tragedy than this. No, we can't read minds and we don't know what anyone's personal demons are, but we can see what they do, and in the end that's the only thing that matters. It's not everyone's responsibility to "understand" everyone else, but it is everyone's responsibility to manage their personal demons and problems so they don't impact others, that's what living in a society is all about. But some people can and some can't. I know absolutely nothing about Amy Winehouse. All I know is that a human has tragically passed on at an early age. And although it may have been a self inflicted cause she was still a human being and possibly unable to manage her demons. I have known several people who died young after many tries at rehab and AA meetings. So some just can't seem to cure themselves. Larry

Life is grey; not black or white. I felt no real sympathy for drug users, but listening to Sarah McLachlan's 'Angel' made me understand it a bit better. If people use drugs, there tends to be underlying reasons. I'm sure each and every one of us have been in so much mental pain and turmoil that we've wanted to shut our minds down to get away from it. I believe you should have strength and courage in those times, and not to turn to substance abuse, but some people are stronger than others - I'm not going to stand up on a balcony and look down on those not as fortunate as me. I don't know what it's like to be anyone else. Hi Nic Very well said Nic. Sarah is a beautiful person both inside and outside. Her love of animals is very touching as I share her sentiments. Regarding the addition issue ....drugs and alcohol are themselves only symptoms of a much deeper issue such as depression and anxiety issues that are buried deeply in the subconscious mind.. Some can root them out and overcome them and some can't. Larry

I agree with Martind regarding Amy Winehouse. Overcoming addition is very difficult. Especially when their causes are so very deep seated in the persons psyche. A celebrity with all the demands on them have a much harder time with additions that regular people. Just look at all the tragic premature deaths over the years. Their schedules are so demanding that they turn to more drugs to keep pace. This exacerbates their problems to the breaking point in many cases.

Harsh and judgmental? Perhaps. I prefer to think of it as believing in standards. You are right in your earlier statement, though, I have more sympathy for someone like Eva, who fell ill through no fault of her own, or Bill Cosby's son, murdered for no reason at all. I have also known some people who used, including some relatives. One died still fairly young, another got out of it, but both caused any number of problems for my family, which they had no right to cause, which has left me unsympathetic to this sort of thing.
