Details of the National Christchurch Memorial Service in North Hagley Park on Friday 18 March 2011 have been announced at Voxy.co.nz. The service will be broadcast live on television and radio.

Well-known Kiwi Singers To Perform At National Memorial Service



International opera singers Hayley Westenra and Dame Malvina Major and one of the country's most well-known musicians, Dave Dobbyn, will perform at the National Christchurch Memorial Service on Friday.

Hayley Westenra will return from London, where she is based, to her hometown to sing the national anthem at the service. All three singers are donating their time to perform at the service.

In addition, musical tributes will play from 10:30am in the lead up to the service before Ngâi Tûâhuriri opens the memorial service proceedings. The service will finish around 2:30pm with more music to follow until 3:30pm.

The Christchurch City Council together with the New Zealand Government is holding the National Christchurch Memorial Service at North Hagley Park from 12pm this Friday 18 March to pay respect to the lives lost in the devastating February 22 earthquake. The service will be broadcast live on television and radio.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says it is wonderful that high-profile Kiwis have taken time out of their schedules to help the people of Christchurch and New Zealand remember those who died in the recent earthquake. "Hayley and Dame Malvina in particular have a strong connection to Christchurch and Hayley's family still lives here. This is a fantastic time for all of New Zealand to make time to reflect on the past three weeks, and to remember those who are no longer with us."

Other VIPs in attendance will include HRH Prince William, Prime Minister John Key, Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker and Dean of ChristChurch Cathedral Peter Beck, all of whom will speak at the event.

Biking or walking to Hagley Park is encouraged and limited bike racks will be provided. There will also be two car parking areas, as well as taxi and drop off points arranged.

They were doing so well using newer media shots of Hayley, and now they're back to another old one. And they're still calling her an opera singer.

www.tvnz.co.nz live streaming via their site and I would think that it would most probably be available via tvnz's channels that they use on Sky.For the number of New Zealanders living overseas I am not sure of the channel number it should be on their website. Not sure if TV3 are doing a live coverage or not keep an eye on www.tv3.co.nz.

It's worse when NZ media does, though. Of course, they mentioned Dame Malvina and Hayley both at once, and I think Malvina is closer to an opera singer than Hayley is. They should've just called them classical singers, or something. That still isn't the best description for Hayley, but she is in no way an "opera singer".

I wouldn't expect the U.S. media to cover it at all, let alone show Hayley. If they do, they'll probably only show Prince William. UK media is more likely to show something from it, but it doesn't mean they will.

i have a similar problem with the concept of genre as it is applied to movies. too often critics, or the media seek to pidgeonhole sth into a category to avoid describing it more fully. Hayley isnt an opera singer, though she does sing opera... and everything else. she is a singer and has a very diverse songlist; she has no category and defies being labelled. as such she is a great inconvenience to the media. but she is our media inconvenience and we love her anyway

Thanks for the info Rodders! I also understand that NZ Herald www.nzherald.co.nz/ will broadcast this live Internationally from their website, so we can choose the one that gives us the best reception of the broadcast.

Hi Dave and everyone It has just been announced that Hayley will be on Newstalkzb Radio with Mike Yardley tomorrow morning sometime before the service starts 12.30pm NZ (noon) 11.30pm UK I think I got that right Yes Dave tvnz is the main Breakfast programme which will probably be the one also TV3 are also broadcasting live the service as well. Mike and Paul Holmes are broadcasting live from the Park so I would imagine she will be interviewed at the venue,so she could be on anytime before the service. those of you catching the broadcast via Newstalkzb when you get to the website www.newstalkzb.co.nz scroll down to the bottom of the home page and on the left hand side you will see area coverage scroll down and click on Christchurch to catch the local stream even though the entire network will be broadcasting the service. I hope this info is helpful to you all,

Hayley is going to be on Closeup tonight (very soon).
Earlier on the TV One news while they broadcast live from the memorial site you could hear the National Anthem being rehearsed. Also we saw about 5 seconds of Hayley talking about the quake. I will tape the Closeup program and it should be on the TV One website later under the Closeup section.
