I'm currently in Newark, California, on the east side of the San Francisco Bay. ..Expectations are that waves will be 1.5-3 feet here. BillR apparently, it was 2 meters at crescent city, which is north of you.. during low tide; it was 15cm here; well in coastal NZ. the spiderman

It's such sad news about the Earthquake. The photos and video are just devastating. I hope people are recovering and hearing from family and friends over there soon. I also hope the Pacific islands which are lower than the tsunami wave will be alright =/ My thoughts and prayers are with everyone.

Hi all
I first learned of the earthquake on TV just as I was going to bed last night. I tried to keep up with the details during work. Now that I am home, I am seeing this double tragedy that is being replayed on CNN. There are no words, folks. CNN just reported that the quake's energy was 8000 times the quake in ChCh.
As the sun rises over Japan, I pray for every single person affected.
Sorry to hear also major damage from the tsunami to numerous harbors on the USA west coast, with one fatality in California

Nothing major here. We only got a few waves that were only a foot or so high, and that was on the coast not really anywhere near me. They say that we'd be more affected by an earthquake in Alaska than one in the Far East. But now of course the local media is talking about the potential earthquakes that could happen off-shore, and how it would cause a big tsunami here. So, even if the Japan earthquake doesn't give us a tsunami, all the recent activity could trigger quakes out here. Or at least I think that's what they're implying. I don't know, it's confusing. They do say that any tsunami won't affect the Puget Sound region (where Seattle is) as bad as the coastline farther south. That may be all well and good for me, but it doesn't make me feel any better about it. Also, with earthquakes, comes the worry of volcanic eruptions.

There was a big explosion at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima only 250km away from Tokyo. It is getting extremely serious now. Maya

My condolences to the people of Japan. I just wish the media wouldn't keep saying the quake was 8000 times stronger than the one that hit Christchurch since it implies the NZ one was insignificant which it most certainly was not to the people affected.

Terrible news, now besides the earthquake and tsunami, Japan's got a nuclear thread... Certainly this is a terrible year for the whole world.

The Japanese people seem very resilient according to recent tweets in response to Hayley's from this morning - which, incidentally, has now been classified a "Top Tweet" Best wishes Grant

I can't say much now that has not already been said. I was so busy yesterday that keeping up with developments took most of my time and then the chatroom. But I did spend a lot of time watching these developments with horror, from the initial foresock 24 hours before to the full fury of the tsunami. Those pictures are probably the most horrific thing I have ever seen, and I hope I never see their like again. It felt like I was watching some Hollywood movie full of special effects. But no, this is real. It involved real people.
Please keep them in your prayers as I will, and do what you can to help, which again is likely to be limited to donating money.
This is all getting far too much!

My aunt and uncle and cousins live in Sendai, Japan, but were providentially in Tokyo when the earthquake struck. They don't know yet if they even have a house.
I moved this post from the Hayley Westenra Twitter Account thread - Richard

Whoa...these pictures are really heartbreaking...I can't believe the amount of devasation- whole cities/towns destroyed/ wiped off the map.. .Not to take anything away from the Christchurch earthquake which was absolutely awful and devastating and still needs the world's attention to help everyone affected get back to some normality...some of the pictures i've seen on the Daily Mail's website and on other sites and videos are absolutely awful...on such a massive scale..I cant stop crying when I look at them., and to think i'd been feeling really down after receiving the news that i'd got a U in my english exam after previously getting A's- and having to retake it this summer...and also being deaf in one ear for the best part of a month due to a really bad ear infection which still hasnt cleared up..i've realised i havent really got anything to worry about like they have..- here's some links to some of the pictures and news articles.. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1366093/Japan-earthquake-Experts-predict-eruption-tsunami-hit-stricken-country-days.htmlHowever, amongst it all there are some really heart-warming stories too... www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1366155/Japan-earthquake-survivor-reunited-baby-daughter--tsunami-warning-sounds.htmlbest wishes Sing

If ever there was a time for Decca to release Hayley's Japanese albums in the UK (and worldwide) and to donate the proceeds to the Japan earthquake appeal, then surely it is now ? But of course they won't do it. They don't listen to people like me !

The World Figure skating Championships were supposed to have been held in Tokyo starting next week, but now they've been postponed, and they might be cancelled. The stadium is okay, but the concern about the radiation and the transportation situation are all a concern for everyone inolved.
It would be quite ironic if it was cancelled, because exactly 50 years ago, the Worlds' were cancelled because of the plane crash that killed the entire U.S. figure skating team, coaches, family, and all. There was even a documentary film called Rise shown in theaters throughout the country in February. It was all very sad, as it is certainly sad now, too.
