A member on my website just started a topic about Hayley using autotune excessively on her recordings. I was shocked! Wow, never thought about this before.. I hope not though. She's good enough, she certainly doesn't need it.

I remember reading about all this years ago on Amazon's customer reviews for Pure. I looked in there and found two reviews worth reading: Here! and also HERE!!!!!Hello Steve! I totally agree with the second review. It's much better than the first one you linked to! Richard Well thank you, kind Sir, I wrote that one! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif It's a bit weird reading one of your own reviews from over 6 years ago - and as you can see, ...I haven't changed my tune! Cheers, Dave

Good idea, Roger! Is that better? Richard Well in view of the studio tricks previously mentioned, perhaps one should misquote John Lewis... "Hayley Westenra - never knowingly autotuned" or even Marks and Spencer... "This isn't just a note - this is a Hayley Westenra note" I must shut up now and get back to work.

Hi Nicola,
I can understand why you have requested that, 'tis done. Hayley may not (does not) need it, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's never happened.

I don't want to give anyone ideas, but there's a phenomenon on YouTube called "AutoTune the News" which makes hilarious fun of people by turning their actual spoken words into singing. I wonder what Hayley's normal speech would sound like if rendered this way for laughs. Would it sound a little like she was singing?

Or should we boil it down to "can you trust anything you ever hear on CD". Perhaps not. But it evens things out, since poor singers can be made to sound good and good singers to sound average.

I must be the only one, but I have no clue what auto tune is. I have to say though, I'm finding the disagreement on the title of this thread rather amusing. :2fun:

Thanks for sharing that, it was very interesting. It's terrible, because it seems to give the message to pop-star wanna-bes the idea that they don't have to be very good singers in order to get a record-deal or be famous, because if they mess up, they'll just fix it artificially. Why can't they just learn how to sing instead, or just do it over. They can't be so terrible singers that they can't ever sing a note on tune. However, the most recent American Idol winner will probably be in need of it. I couldn't stand it when he won. The girl in 2nd place was obviously the far better singer.

now i'm not sure what an autotuner is...but i just got done watching the dvd of hayleys tour in ireland...a concert my girlfriend went to and is shown just a glimpse of in a couple frames...and hayley sounds flippin amazing...i couldn't tell the difference between the concert dvd and the cd's...so i would guess the only way she would use and auto tuner would be if she tried singing with a hoarse voice...

Thanks Dave for the link to Hayley and the ukelele. I loved it!
Since I started this whole affair, I should give an update. The autotune I thought I was hearing from Shenandoah was due to my less than optimal computer speakers. They didn't handle echo at all well and produced a very distressing sound. The same thing happened when I listened to Isabel Suckling. I have since gotten some slightly better speakers and the sound is much improved. I'm thinking of upgrading drastically to the B&W MM-1 usb speakers; very expensive but no sound card needed.
I got the idea of the bad speakers from this post:
I noted that he also said that no background synth exists on the Brit Classical charts.
