Hi Libby,
Don't forget "On the Wings of Time". We know Hayley wrote the lyrics, but not the melody, to that one.

Libby,
I think we are going to have to agree to disagree on the merits of Hayley as a songwriter. To me, 'she composed most of the lyrics herself' makes her a lyricist. Which is not a bad thing, don't get me wrong, but a songwriter writes the words AND the music that goes with it.
Do we know for sure that Hayley has ever composed any of the actual music? If not, I think we are simply talking about different things.

ok...hayely and miley...as in hannah montana miley? uh...heck no...theres just no way i would want to see that or hear that...it...except on hayleys part...would just sound awful...miley cant even sing good...at least in my opinion... Hahaha, yes, as in the Hannah Montana Miley. I feel the same, that a duet between Miley and Hayley would sound awful. Though, Miley certainly can sing, but I feel both the voices would not match. Cheers, Anshita Some duets just wouldn't work. That's one of them. hehe

Are they lesser artists because they essentially sang music composed by others? Larry

To quote myself from the last page: "It doesn't make the singer in any way less talented as a singer if they are not singing songs they wrote themselves."

Hayley definitely has the edge over many so-called singer/songwriters. She can sing while a lot of them can't, but I won't name them here. Richard

As I said in Larry's new thread, I'll be happy with whatever Hayley does. I don't mind if Hayley never "composes" any of her songs, but if she ever did, I'm sure it would be great. I know she didn't compose the music to those songs I listed, but I didn't expect her to. So, she wrote the words to the songs and not the music. That's good enough for me. Let her do what she wants, and I'll always enjoy it. At least the media has been referring to her as a songwriter more often, so obviously they don't "know" the difference either.

As a lyricist of course, she wrote most of the lyrics on the HSJS albums too. She had help though, since most are translations from the Japanese, but somehow she has made those lyrics her own. I think she must have done most of the work, but that is pure speculation of course.

where did the whole hayley as a songwriter conversation come from? granted the fact that she is very talented...to put my two cents in...it would be nice if hayley would put out a cd of songs that is made up of song that only she wrote...and by that i mean the lyrics...who knows...perhaps she could squeeze out some original music to go along with them...who knows...maybe even get some of these "unlikely" pairings on it too

As you have put in your 2 cents (last off the big time gamblers I see) I’ll put in my 2 cents and raise you 2, and say I think Hayley would make an excellent songwriter from what I’ve read, but isn’t she supposed to have some of her own songs on this NEW album coming out. And is this in the right thread, I was almost going to transfer it to the composer thread or am I just out of touch Jennie B.

Hello Jennie! Don't worry about it. I'm losing the plot in some of these threads too. Best wishes, Richard

Well, songwriting came up, so I joined in. Plus I'm not really as interested in the original topic anymore.

well...i would like to thank everybody who has replied to this thread that i had started...and even though many of the replies have touched way off base with the topic...it is still nice to see so much feed back and also great to see how one topic can steam off into so many other ones...i have said before and will say again that i had no idea that this topic would even take off as much as it has... and i can admit that i am not a die hard know everything about hayley westenra type of person...but i am a huge fan of her music...even though i scratch my head and ask myself "what are they talking about"...its still good to know that i can connect with people here... well thanks again...please feel free to continue on this thread as you wish...

Still fun, Failedreaper! Hadn't really considered it before for Hayley, but cross-genre duets can sometimes be really good. Each bringing a different 'feel' to the music can have a really unique and interesting effect (Anyone doubting me should listen to LeAnn Rimes' & Joss Stone's Crossroads duets. Easy to find on YouTube).
