At this point, I think I just need to learn how to convert the DVDs, if that's even possible. Would the quality really be that much worse? I just can't stand being left out like this anymore. I wouldn't advise anyone new to this to try it (especially with freeware available on the internet) unless they have step by step instructions; it's going to be a bit complicated and your computer system needs to be able to handle it. There will definitely be a quality loss, mostly a slight increase in jerkyness on moving objects but in a static concert setting, it might not be noticeable, and some people won't be bothered anyway. The picture sharpness will also drop slightly on large screen TVs but the audio quality should be fine. I might have a look at it myself over the next week or two, so I can see exactly what's involved with widely available free software. I usually use commercial software so it's a doddle on the rare occasions I need to do NTSC/PAL conversions or vice versa; but with freeware it ain't easy so watch this space. EDIT: The simple way to do this involves spending some money, unfortunately. You can buy a multi-system multi-region DVD player for $50 to $55 (maybe less if you look around) i.e. they play NTSC or PAL DVDs and can be viewed on an NTSC TV. e.g. www.amazon.com/Pioneer-DV-320K-Multiregion-DVD-Player/dp/tech-data/B002MLOKZQ/ref=de_a_smtd or www.amazon.com/PIONEER-MULTISYSTEM-PLAYER-ALL-WORLDWIDE-VOLTAGE/dp/B002WQ3732Dave

Ha ha ha - there's probably some poor person scratching their heads wondering how on earth orders from Asia, Australia, New Zealand and USA are coming in for a modest little DVD which hasn't been advertised! LOL!

Thanks Grant
I have ordered 2 copies. Good to see that the p&p charge is the same for 2 as 1. When I ordered 2 N.I. DVD's I had to pay 2 p&p charges even though they were coming to the same address!
Cheers

Libby, Jillian, Dave and All. I have been able to successfully (sort of) convert PAL to NTSC with the "Tour of Northern Ireland" DVD. I didn't write down the step-by-step process but will do so when the "Salisbury Cathedral" DVD arrives. I used JES Deinterlacer to convert the main title from PAL to NTSC then used Roxio Toast to burn the video onto a blank DVD. As others have indicated, there is some jerkiness to the resulting video but it is ok. The other downside is that the original DVD menu structure is lost so all I ended up with was the main title video. Converting the video to a format to play directly on AppleTV is much easier but that sacrifices the menu structure as well. You can also use a program called RipIt that will convert the DVD (PAL or NTSC) into a "container" that mimics the structure of the original DVD including the menu. I typically use that for putting entire DVDs onto a network drive that is accessible by my aTV Flash hacked AppleTV. aTV Flash includes nitoTV that can play the DVD "container" just like a DVD. I'm sure you can also do that with other similar devices. Buying a second DVD player (as Dave indicated) with PAL compatibility may be the easiest and cheapest. An alternative would be to get a device like the new AppleTV ($99) that would allow you to stream video from your computer to your main TV/Entertainment system using iTunes. Maybe this weekend I'll play with it some more. Bill

Wow, I think I'd go for the DVD player instead. The other stuff sounds a little too complicated for me, and I don't want a jerky video. Question: can more than 1 player hook up to 1 TV at a time? I don't really want to get rid of the one I have. However, I may not be able to order one now, anyway, going by something someone posted on the official forum: So I don't get this one or the Northern Ireland one, now, do I?

Oh, and Jillian, my speakers are just fine. I just don't see the point of buying a DVD that I can only play on my computer, when I can easily watch other performances of Hayley's songs on youtube, for FREE. Plus, it would be nice to watch Hayley on my TV a little more often.

Oh dear, we're not having a good run with DVDs at the moment, are we? I think they may have seriously underestimated how popular a DVD featuring Hayley would be. It was a bit naive of them to think that word wouldn't spread fast amongst Hayley fans about such a DVD. I was very much looking forward to my copy - but if there's licensing issues, that might put a stop to it. I just looked up Limited Manufacturing Licenses. www.prsformusic.com/users/recordedmedia/cdsandvinyl/Pages/LimitedManufactureLicence(LM).aspxThey seem to be the kind of license that allows schools and churches etc to film and distribute recordings of performances of school plays etc. So I suppose selling the DVD internationally wouldn't be an option on that license. Here's to Hayley recording a proper, official DVD in 2011! Cheers, Jillian

Oh dear everyone! So sorry about this! Whilst the information I received did say that the DVD was a response "to many requests to relive the evening", there was no suggestion that the DVD was only intended to be available to those people. Had this been the Underhill's intention, then I believe they should have made this clear because I think with any well known performer, their fan base would circulate details like I did. I notice that the link I provided now only goes to the home page with no mention of the DVD against Salisbury - I can only hope that the international response has been such that consideration is being given to relicensing the DVD for international sale. This can only benefit the Underhill's fund raising efforts for the Royal British Legion. Best wishes Grant

Hi Spiderman I don't follow your logic. Just because an item is 2x the weight doesn't mean it costs 2x to post it. The first class UK postal charge for a packet is £1.39 for up to 110g, £1.72 for up to 250g, £2.24 for up to 500g. A DVD in a case weighs 87g, jiffy bags bought in bulk cost pence and the individual weight is negligible . Organisations get large discounts for bulk posting. Tony

Hi Grant, Don't feel bad about circulating the details - like you said, there was nothing that indicated you shouldn't and I would have done the same thing too - especially when the Royal British Legion benefits from sales. Likewise, I hope that they are looking into relicensing the DVD - it could generate a decent contribution to the Royal British Legion. Cheers, Jillian

Oh dear everyone! So sorry about this! Hi Grant, As Jillian said, there nothing to feel sorry about as you did nothing wrong and everything right. Looks like Mr. Underhill omitted some vital information from his offer for concert-goers to buy the DVD i.e. that it was meant to be restricted to the concert-goers. Also, posting details in a forum is not really advertising in the usual sense, it's spreading the word - something that fans have done since time immemorial and long may you (and we!) continue to do so. I do sympathise with Mr Underhill though, he tried to do something to benefit the concert-goers and the charity, but in doing so seems to have dropped a bit of a clanger. But I hope he will allow all orders already accepted and paid for to be fulfilled. Libby, thanks for bringing this to our attention. Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave
Thanks for your support - I do agree that it was not made clear that this was intended just for concert goers - had it been, then clearly I would not have made such a big thing of it.
I do, however, feel sorry for raising members hopes of a concert DVD which they may not now be able to have. I just hope, as I said in my previous post, that Mr Underhill will feel justified in upgrading the licence (if it is possible to do so) to enable this very worthwhile DVD to be released internationally.
Best wishes Grant

Well, those of us who have had orders accepted will just have to wait and see what happens.
I hope whatever it is it will not leave Mr Underhill out of pocket, either because of underestimated postal costs or having to send refunds to those of us who have paid through Paypal. He was clearly trying to do a good thing for both those who supported the event and the RBL.
And no Grant, it wasn't your fault - I would have done exactly the same.
