I live in London, (or near enough) and we say "Merry". I don't like "xmas" either, as it just looks lazy. As an athiest, I'm neither here or there on the "Christ" debate - but xmas just looks messy.

On a related note: Which is the better name: "Santa Claus" or "Father Christmas"? I may have to answer my own question here. "Santa" (or the more more formal "Santa Claus") is much better. "Father Christmas" sounds weird. I don't think of Santa as anybody's dad, just a jolly old saint who merrily delivers gifts every year from his sleigh pulled by reindeer..
