I think the various opinions on the dress are mainly because it surprised a lot of people. There's no doubt that we all get certain expectations of others based on our past knowledge of them, so that anything we see as 'out of character' causes us to reassess what we thought we knew. That being somewhat disconcerting if we think we know the other person quite well (Or at least that aspect of them!) it can take us a while to get used to.
Richard - I love the Lucy Westenra idea, I must admit! Even as a vampire, though, Lucy was rather a conservative dresser, IIRC, as ladies of her age tended to be. Not that I've read the novel in a long time, though, so I could be wrong on that one...
