I don't tink I have ever seen an artist from a rival label on there. No, you won't do. One of the main criteria for eligibility is that auditionees don't have an existing recording contract. Roger

I just can't tolerate the whole format of this hyped-up show, to the OTT applauding by judges to the has-been singers they drag in, to revive their careers. It's just one bland singer after another. Hi IHF, I agree with your comments in general but I would say that occasionally, a little gem sneaks through the mill and the mire to escape and sparkle at the other end. I'd say there are usually one or two competitors in each reality talent series who can actually sing and even sing in tune, and every now and then, one of them reaches the final. They don't usually win but sometimes go on to have succeassful recording careers, in spite of the hype and everything else thrown at them. Paradoxically, the reason "proper singers" don't usually win, even if they reach the final, is that they are thought of by "the masses" as bland and unexciting, no matter how well they can sing. That is one reason why Hayley would not win a talent show like that, it is her (incorrect!) perception among the masses. So let's not make this thread a debate about the merits or evils of the Cowell empire, as few would support his way of doing business, but instead think of it as a search for the occasional gem. That singer who can actually sing, sing in tune and perhaps even in a style that some of us like - and that doesn't mean only classical as some of us have broader tastes! I have liked two of this year's bunch, one of whom has made the final, so that's why I am interested in the thread (after some initial reservations about it). Those who don't like Cowell, the show or any of the remaining singers are as always completely free to ignore the thread altogether. Cheers, Dave

Yes, I suppose that last comment was a little unfair. There has been a little gem unearthed through this type of show, in the shape of Faryl Smith. Unsurprisingly though, she didn't win.

I'm glad that Joe McElderry won the X Factor!
Reports are that his version of Miley Cyrus's "The Climb" will be a dead cert as the Xmas No. 1.
Cheers, Joe

I wonder how Rage Against the Machine did?
I have to admit, I backed Rage, and I bought their single. Not that I'll listen to it (not my kind of thing at all!)

Yes, I have to say I'm glad about that, even though I did not buy either single. At least Rage's money is going to support Shelter, a worthwhile charity.

X-Factor didn't get Number One, but I'm sure this well-publicised battle at least helped to further line Simon Cowell's pockets.
Gone are the days when the Christmas Number One actually meant something.

It's a constant misconception that Simon Cowell benefitted financially from Rage's single. It's completely false. Simon is nothing but an employee of Sony - he is not a share holder, and Rage and Simon belong to two different sub-labels. Either way, the money issue is besides the point - the point was to stop X-Factor's monopoly over the Christmas number one, and that was achieved. No doubt Joe will be number one next week.

Either way, the money issue is besides the point - the point was to stop X-Factor's monopoly over the Christmas number one, and that was achieved. No doubt Joe will be number one next week. Yes indeed, it proved that The Master can be beaten and that must be good for music! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif However, whether or not Simon has a financial interest in Sony, he will have benefited indirectly as the battle and surrounding publicity is sure to have pushed up the sales of Joe's recording. But I'm really here tonight in praise of someone who doesn't have his own thread (yet!) and who has appeared twice on this X Factor series, benefiting considerably (and deservedly in my opinion) from that. He is... Michael Bublé. If there is significant interest, we can start a new thread on him but it may be only me, so I won't be the one to do it. For several years, I've seen Bublé occasionally in the top ten of the UK album charts, sometimes very high, he's even had a triple platinum... but I've always thought "who's that?" and moved on. Never listened to him... until he appeared on X Factor. I was astonished by the quality of his performance and now, I can see exactly why he is so popular. Unlike in many other Countries, he's never had a UK no. 1 album and that hasn't changed but it may be about to change. To the astonishment of UK music fans, he has steadily increased his weekly sales and chart positions over the last few weeks until now, he looks like he could beat Susan Boyle to the next no. 1 - which would be his first. Yes, he could beat S usan Boyle this week! Here are his chart positions and sales since "Crazy Love" was released: 2 - 78,005 2 - 112,314 3 - 71,284 6 - 59,859 8 - 56,248 6 - 70,274 6 - 91,563 3 - 118,443 2 - 251,843 Tot. 909,833 He will pass the million this week and if he beats Susan Boyle in "Christmas Week" sales, as he may do, it will be astonishing. He has made a tremendous and sustained effort to promote his album in the UK this year and clearly, that's paying dividends. If anyone 'deserves' his first UK no. 1 in this festive season, it is him. And of course, Joe McElderry. In the singles chart, he will probably get his, too! Cheers, Dave unusually, supporting male singers this week!
