I am sure that Maya will tell us what is being said - I think I heard a joke, which sounded hilarious when Hayley had just spoken about her suitcase - I daren't even say what the word is that I heard in case I am wrong - so I will let Maya explain it!
Cheers, Dave
Hi Dave and all.
I will write the summary of the interview here. I am sorry it is just a brief translation.
There were two MCs. The man is named
Tohru Watanabe who is an actor. The woman is an announcer of NHK named
Nachiko Shudoh. There was also a woman who was an
interpreter behind Hayley but I could confirm only 2 expressions to hear from her were
”Kouen de yoku sanpo shitari” in English it means, (=“to walk in a park often”) and
“Akai Suitcase wa Sookie “ (= The red suitcase was Sookie”). I don't know she was fully interpreting all the MC’s words to Hayley or not. But I must inform you that NHK has very good equipments for simultaneous interpretations. They use very small wireless earphones. The equipment must be helping Hayley some. But judging from my family’s experience with Hayley to talk, she understands many short Japanese expressions and she actually responds in Japanese. At the show, she was quickly responding saying,
“Subarashii” which means (“Wonderful”),
“Arigatou gozaimasu”(=”Thank you very much”),
“Honto?” (=Really?”) ,
“Yoroshiku onegai shimasu”(=”Please let me do it / Please allow me to do it / Will you please do it”) and others. The last expression has different meanings at situations.
As people often say, Hayley has a very good command of foreign languages. She had a very good reputation at the World Game in Taiwan, you know. Her accents and pronunciations of Japanese are far better than most of those foreigners who speak Japanese, I can say. Anyway below is the summary.
The interview starts with the big surprise of Tohru with a gesture.Tohru: What a wonderful voice that was!
Nachiko: I was almost mesmerized.
Hayley: Arigatou gozaimasu (= Thank you very much.)
Tohru: Oh, Thank you for replying me in Japanese.
Nachiko: Hayley was born in New Zealand. The album released in year 2001 when she was 14 had great hits in different countries. Her voice has echoed all over the world and it has been loved by many people
Tohru: Was it Pokare kare …?
Nachiko: Pokare kare ana.
Hayley: Pokare kare ana.
Tohru: Pokare kara ana.? Right?
Hayley: Subarashii (= That’s wonderful).
Tohru: It reminds me of a Japanese expression,
“Okane kari nakya” (= “I need to borrow money”) in English.
Nachiko: No, It is totally different.
Everybody laughs because it has a totally different meaning.
Tohru: Is there any secrets to keep your voice beautiful?
Hayley: I think for singers, (what) really important is to have just healthy body and healthy mind. So,… just,…lots of sleep, good foods and some relaxation time.
Tohru: Is there anything that you are trying to do?
Hayley: I think it’s very important,…OK,…very important to go for like walks at parks,… and,… I took a walk here,… ah,…
Interpreter: Kouen de yoku sanpo shitari (= to walk in a park often).
Tohru: Oh, I am sorry, you said, ”park”. I thought you said,”pork” and I imagined you to eat pork to keep your beautiful voice.
Hayley: Really?
Honto? (= Really?)
Tohru: I want you to sing another song later soon again.
Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.
Hayley: Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.
The scene changes, there stands a cellist named Hajime Mizoguchi.
Hajime and Tohru were talking about unusual his habit that he made it a rule to call his instruments by human name. Hajime calls his 300 year old cello “Angela” given the name by his friend. He also mentioned that he used to had a cello named “Sachan”. Tohru: Do you play any instruments, Hayley?
Hayley: I can play,… I used to play a bit of violin, a little bit of piano, a little bit of guitar.
Tohru: You play different instruments, as I have imagined. Do you name instruments?
Hayley: No, but I name suitcases.
Tohru: Suitcase?
Hayley: We had,… I've ever had a red suitcase named
“Sookie”. I can’t remember how we,….
Tohru: Sookie?
Hayley: Yeah,
Sookie.
Tohru: Wow, you named suitcase
“Sookie”. Please do not interpret this.
“Afo ka?”(= Are you stupid?) How strange that was!
Nachiko: Now we request you to do a collaboration for Hayley and Hajime.
Tohru. I was counting on it. What did you choose for it?
Hajime: I remembered Amazing Grace first when I was requested to collaborate with Hayley.
Hayley: I really love Amazing Grace ,...
Hayley's explanation continues and the collaboration begins. So much for the translation.
Hope this could help you some to understand the interview.
Maya.
