Thanks Richard In case anybody doesn't know, the poppy leaf should be set to 11 o'clock to commemorate the signing of the armistice at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, when hostilities on the Western Front ceased towards the end of the First World War. Aah! suppose I should have clarified that in my post! I've been quite surprised how many 'influential' people on TV and the like have also clearly not understood or cared about the significance Best wishes Grant

To clarify it further, 11th November 1918 is regarded as the official end of the First World War.

Martin A lot of tv presenters set up in front of a mirror which may explain the 1 o'clock position, they see it at 11 o'clock..

well...i got mine a couple of days ago...but it fell to pieces as i was fastening it to my coat. ..so I stuck it to the wall in my bedroom...i think i should get another though- i will when i see another poppy person...but there aren't many where I live unfotunately- what makes me angry though is over 5 of the schools around my area volunteered to help sell poppies - we even saw the clip of Hayley on GMTV...and some of these photos to persuade us to get involved...but people laughed at Hayley singing with Dame Vera Lynn and the teachers in all the schools said it would be too disruptive to our studies if we helped!!. ..also... I don't think that I'm really showing my support enough...not many people will see my wall (thankfully!!!) does Hayley wear her poppy with the leaf in the right position do you think... to be honest I never knew about that but it sounds sensible to me!!! Despite being a 'mature', well travelled Francophile I was not aware of the "Bleuet" until I 'sold' a poppy to a French lady last night. She had spent most of her life in England but her mother had told her about the cornflower.

Whilst I have often been found in France on the second Thursday in November (for Beaujolais Nouveau), I have obviously missed out on Armistice Day.

Hello everyone Had my first poppy selling session this afternoon and I was partnered with an 84 year old veteran ex RAF Technician who was very interesting to listen to in the quieter moments, although there weren't many of those. Our table was set up close to the exit of our local and very large ASDA store which, in the three days it had operated up to 8pm last night, had collected over £3300 - the generosity of some people is amazing and we had some very interesting comments. Highlights of the afternoon included the manager of the local Dominos Pizza who wanted a poppy for each of his staff - 32 in all, and a lady who deposited a very large bag of copper coins on the table in exchange for her poppy! I was quite surprised how tired I was at the end of my session but I'm still looking forward to my next session (with the same gentleman) on Thursday. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBest wishes Grant

Hi Grant,
It sounds like such an interesting and fun thing to do. If only I could sell poppy's here! I liked the story of the Domino's manager coming to buy poppy's for all of his employees - very neat!

Hi Grant,
If only I didn't have to work, and run a church whilst our minister is away in India on a sabbatical, I might have time to do the same. I'm sure I would enjoy it. Well done, it is a very wothwhile thing to support. Meanwhile, at Church we have a remembrance service to think about, complete with visiting dignitaries like the town mayor, the local RAF Association and Grenedier Guards association. We have a retired minister (and very dear friend) who is in his eighties to lead it. It was touch and go whether he would be well enough. But, thank the Lord, he is a lot better. Although I lead worship from time to time (I did so last Sunday), I don't think I would have been comfortable with a high profile service like that.

Hi Joe, Caitlin, Martin and everyone I am finding my little contribution very rewarding and I will certainly be offering my services in the future; I've even been invited to join the RBL and am considering it. Caitlin: the Dominos pizza chap wanting 32 poppies quite put us on the spot. When you're geared up to hand out one, maybe two poppies at a time, it's quite challenging working out how to give someone that many. I had to scratch around for a bag to count them into. Never fear, I will be prepared for anything on Thursday! Incidentally, I tweeted Hayley to say that I had enjoyed my first session, I didn't expect a repy but I got the following ... which I thought was very sweet of her. Best wishes Grant

Hi Grant, Did you have any left after that!? The poppies they sell in Australia seem a bit different to the UK ones -- much prettier, I think. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif They look more like real flowers: When I bought mine outside Woolworths, there was this little girl there who was excitedly babbling on about 'the man selling the pretty flowers!!' She dumped alll of her pocket money onto the table and was going on about all her friends that she was going to give them to. So cute. They also sell badges, so I got one of those, because I figured it would be easier to pin that onto something. So my flower poppy is now decorating my 'study buddy' which I have hanging off my overhead desk light.

Hi Jillian Hi Grant, Did you have any left after that!? Yes, we still had plenty of poppys left although most of the collecting tubs were full by the time we left i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifBest wishes Grant

Hi Jillian and everyone They also sell badges, so I got one of those, because I figured it would be easier to pin that onto something. We also have those little lapel badges here in the UK but here in Derbyshire, we also have something a bit special. Your post reminded me that I had meant to post about it after the Poppy Launch. Here it is .... The poppy is displayed against Derbyshire's own county flag and it is only available from local Legion branches. It is interesting that, despite the debate we've been having, the poppy leaf is depicted at 11 o'clock. This was the surprise I had for Hayley at the Poppy Launch and I was able to present her with one after the formal proceedings. I also gave one to Hayley to give to Dame Vera. Best wishes Grant
