Nice, very nice... I even liked Katherine's solo part, excepting for the last note in the first "sleep in heavenly peace", she clearly overdoes the vibratto there, bad place and bad song for that strong vibratto. Jackie did great, of course, but, is it just me or does she sound like a little unnatural in the high notes, like forcing a little bit... Maybe she was unconfortable with the key in which they sung or Katherine's mezzo-soprano voice as a reference.

Nice performance overall. But putting lipstick on Jackie? Come on! She's TEN!

She even had a ring on her left finger! Her ring finger! What are these people thinking? She's too young for a boyfriend, let alone a husband! As for the duet, as a whole it was sweet to see them sing together, but my ears didn't care for it very much. I was watching it for Josh Groban, and I didn't even know Katherine was in it. When I heard her name announced, I was certainly interested in hearing her, since I know who she is, and probably most audience members hadn't a clue. But I just don't like the yawning sound in her voice, or the operatic way she sang Silent Night. In my opinion, Silent Night should sound soft and lovely. The vibrato took the softness right out of it. Jackie was okay, but even she was sounding a bit yawny herself. I was mostly noticing how it seemed like work for her to sing this. I have a feeling she could sing this a little more smoothly if she wanted to, without belting out so laboriously. She'd still sound lovely. Why can't she just sing like a girl that has a beautiful voice? For someone who's not going to be an opera singer (allegedly), she sure sounds like she's trying to be. Operatic voices just aren't that pleasant-sounding to me. I prefer singers who basically can just open their mouths and sing beautifully and effortlessly. I'm sure you can't imagine who I might be referring to. I enjoyed the performances by Susan Boyle, Josh Groban, and even Annie Lennox more. They had a pretty good line-up this time.

Hello folks! I watched the video, and Jackie Evancho sounds too similar to Katherine Jenkins for my liking. Her voice is far too deep for her age. Richard

Hmm, all this negativity and I didn't even put my two-cents' worth in! I thought Jackie and Katherine sounded beautiful together. Maybe they could do Delibes' Flower Duet from Lakmé someday, too. Katherine seemed very comfortable, perhaps drawing on her teaching skills and time mentoring Faryl to bring Jackie up to the challenge. I sensed a warmth that passed between them and radiated out to the crowd.

We had discussed before that she was probably a mezzo-soprano - whether this is early blooming or her voice will deepen further is an open question. but in my opinion, the tone is quite lovely at present. I dont know if its conscious or not, but Jackie seems to be able to partly mime whatever singer she is studying at the time. When it was Brightman she sounded something like Sarah. Now she sounds like Katherine. Frankly I am glad that David Foster seems to have finally found a full time job...it is at least the fourth time he has accompanied her on piano. When Jackie's EP debuted on the Billboard 200 last week at #2, it established a new record for the youngest to break the top 10. Michael Jackson (as a member of the Jackson 5) was 11. Somehow the too operatic kid whose voice is too deep has managed to move almost 400,000 CD's in two weeks. In for a penny.....here is the version of O Holy Night which didnt get shown in some parts of the US. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqDawGfn2xQ

Well, good for her. She's certainly very talented, she just doesn't do much for me. Hayley's version of the song is so much prettier and more pleasant to listen to. I'm still wondering why she was wearing a ring on her ring finger.

Hi Libby,
Yes, I agree, I'd far rather hear Hayley sing it. But you can't judge other singers by comparing them to Hayley, it isn't fair. There is only one Hayley.
Jackie is showing she can adapt. That is wonderful, and something that Hayley does too. I am more and more impressed by her. I think she is a natural singer, just as Hayley is. It would be interesting to hear her sing a duet with Hayley. Would she sound like Hayley? Now that would be something. But her range sounds a bit lower than Hayley's.

Hi Spidey,
Yes, I agree, Hayley, as I've said before, can make me love songs I hate with a passion. She is unique in never having ever sung anyhthing I don't like. No other artist has ever done that, they all seem inconsistent compared to Hayley.
That being said, Jackie is phenomenal for her age. A singer that could carry Sarah Brightman for heavens sake, at 10 years old. She is different to Hayley for sure, and has not yet developed a style or musical personality. She is still experimenting, but so was Hayley at an older age than that. Just as I preferred 16 year old Hayley to 23 year old Katherine J, so I am impressed by Jackie. Who knows what the future holds. But there is a lot of water to go under the bridge. Jackie needs to develop her own unique style and personality, just as Hayley did, and at present she is too young for us to see what that will be like. But she has the talent for sure, but there is a lot of hard work ahead of her, and potential pitfalls, before she can be compared to Hayley.
My fear is that because of the Simon Cowell machine, she has peaked too soon. That she will burn out, that fame will go to her head, that she will be forgotten before she reaches her peak, that she will decide to do something else, that she will rebel and wreck her voice like Charlotte Church. These are the pitfalls she has to avoid. I wish her well.

I'm still wondering why she was wearing a ring on her ring finger. You have quite the Eagle Eye, I didn't notice it until I enlarged the video. umm, pretty much true of everything though... i cant think of a hayley song version i dont like... and if i did it wouldnt be jackies version. sometimes i wish she'd sing like a kid; im sure theres a pretty voice in there somewhere.. really. in truth it didnt hurt my ears as much as usual... Singing straight works well for Hayley since she has such a beautiful voice, adding vibrato to it will only cause unnecessary distraction. Most other artists aren't blessed with this priviledge, hence the need for the vibrato technique. In my opinion, Jackie's "normal" voice still sounds too childish, that's why she's only marketing her operatic voice right now.

Jackie's Pie Jesu was very nice, the least operatic sounding song she sang on AGT. I actually don't care for Hayley's recorded version very much, although I love the one on youtube. Dennis, I was watching the show on my TV, so the picture was already enlarged, and clearly, at that. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Plus she was holding her hands up so absurdly high, how could I have missed it? It really looks silly to me when she does that. Katherine seemed to do just fine without doing it. But you can't judge other singers by comparing them to Hayley, it isn't fair. Actually, I can, especially if I'm comparing how pleasant a voice sounds to my ears. And Hayley's definitely sounds better to mine. I'm sure there are some people (like some of the commenters of Hayley's Pie Jesu video) who do prefer Jackie. As far as Jackie's talent, especially considering her age and experience (or lack thereof), then in that case perhaps it isn't fair. But I wasn't comparing talents. I was comparing how each one sounds to my ears. In that case alone, it is fair.

I loved O Holy Night! And in the few higher notes there, she sounded much better and natural to me than in Silent Night, so, definately something has musically disturbed her (as I said, the most possible reason I can think of are an unusual key to her or having as a reference Katherine's mezzo voice).
And,,I notice that she is working on her lower register, so, yes. she may end up being a mezzo-soprano, but her natural timbre is that of a soprano, unlike Faryl (who in my opinion has a natural mezzo-soprano timbre which could be the envy of many of the best mezzos).

According to a post on Jackie's Facebook page, her ring is a purity, or Daddy's, ring.
Unlike most of you, I first heard Jackie sing on AGT before discovering this forum, which then led me to listen to Hayley. The two are very different, and not just because of their age, at least so far.
Hayley has a very light, effortless approach to singing, whereas Jackie, being a very petite ten-year-old, has no choice but to go all-out. Plus, that jibes with the emotional intensity she brings to each song.
I happen to love the tone of Jackie's voice and the emotional connection she makes. I just hope she will be able to retain those qualities in the coming years. Meanwhile, everyone can enjoy Hayley, who has already made it through her development years.
