Indeed, although Hayley has never been political like Joan. I read Joan joked that she sang "songs of misery" (a bit like Leonard Cohen I suppose "songs to commit suicide by"). Hayley's songs are mostly songs of hope, so becoming like Joan would be a big change for her. I think I prefer her singing songs of hope anyway. They are the ones that lift people spirits rather than depress them. Something that Hayley is tather good at I think.

Not necessarily "songs of misery", but ones that have a sad theme and lyrics don't necessarily depress you. Sometimes they actually help you. Case in point, for Hayley: Melancholy Interlude, her most over-looked self-penned track, or so it seems. Lately I've begun to think it's one of the most exquisite songs she's ever written. I still say it contains one of her most beautiful notes ever uttered. Anyway, sometimes it helps you to dwell a bit on sad lyrics and a emotional melody for a while, and I honestly think it gives a person a deeper appreciation for music. As opposed the annoying "Happy" song by Pharell Williams, there's no emotion brought out whatsoever in that song, just irritation. LOL Not to mention its unbearably repetitive.

I one of those weird people who really enjoys sad songs. To put it in perspective, Josh Groban's "Illuminations" is one of my favourites! I also truly enjoy Hayley's version of "I Hope I Never." However I also like hopeful songs. Really there just needs to be a good balance between the two. I'm just all over the place. :je Not to mention it's one in the morning... So sorry for my going on... -Taylor

Hope you had a great day, Libby. Yes I find that "Happy" song rather depressing ! Like you, I do like sad songs. Wasn't it none other than Elton John who said "Sad songs say so much ?"

The longer I dwell on Hayley's twitter-pic, the more intriguing it becomes to me. I was originally thinking that she was trying out a borrowed guitar belonging to Pedro(?). Now I am thinking that it may be just the reverse. Am wondering if Hayley's intent of the twitter-pic was to show a new guitar of hers. BobS

Hayley of course sings plenty of sad songs. But the difference is they are always positive. "1000 Winds", "Nada Sousou" "Tsubomi", "A Crescent Moon" for example. With Hayley there is always light at the end of the tunnel. With some other singers, the aforementioned Leonard Cohen is one (much as I like his music), there is no positive slant, nothing but doom and depression.

I'm rather confused. There was a concert? The Joan Baez review says nothing about anybody else performing, so I'm very, very confused about all of it. I had assumed Hayley was just meeting Joan after the show as her fans always try to do with her. Can someone explain to me what this concert/performance was all about? There's not much hope in Melancholy Interlude, and yet I have found it soothing anyway. Probably because of her exquisite voice.

Libby,
As I understand it Joan Baez performed at the London Festival Hall and Hayley was in the audience and got to meet her. Nothing at all about Hayley performing or anyone else except Joan. I wasn't there so I don't know, but that's how I interpreted things.

I think Hayley was singing at a "private party" for her friend Carina Jirsch who it seems is leaving London. The caption on Carina's instagram reads:- It looks to me like this was the following night.

Oh, yes, I see. You're right. I got confused by the red necklace. The top is different, but I thought she might have changed. I guess technically she did, but it was much longer between than I originally imagined. LOL Oh, now that I read the caption to the video, it's all clear now (or might have been if I'd seen it in the first place. ) @hayleywestenra & @ddsdotmu sing 'Jolene' for Carina's farewell #carinasaysbyebye #dollyparton
