It really gives you a jolt when you hear someone has just died who is the same age as yourself. I did my O-levels to this guy's music. Of course I first came across him when he was part of The Jackson 5 ("Rockin' Robin" in 1972) but it was a solo artist that he excelled. As a 12 year old I loved "Ben" even if it was about a rat ! "Ain't no sunshine when she's gone" was another favourite, still sung in reality shows today but I think it was "One day in your life" that I'll remember best.
You've had great singers (Sinatra, with whom MJ worked). You've had great dancers (Astaire) but it is very rare indeed to find both talents combined in one performer. Michael "invented" the music video and it pains me that an artist who sold 750 million records (he made a reported $125m from the "Thriller" video alone) should die with debts of around 400 million, hence the 50 O2 concerts. He seems to have had an unhappy life, striving to regain the childhood he never had. May he rest in peace.

I was extremely upset to hear about his passing. I have always loved his music, but I suppose I never really realized it until I heard the news. Since then I've been listening to everything on the radio about him. I also feel extremely sorry for his children - they're so young! I can't imagine going through what they are. RIP MJ you will never be forgotten. <3

Yes, it is terribly sad news, and I have been most upset for his family, especially his children. He went through a lot in his short life and it was a shame that it had to end to fast, so sudden and so tragically. Hayley was obviously a fan also. He is a terribly loss, and I will always treasure the famous We Are the World, as it should be.

Hi all,
I was also very upset and saddened at the untimely death of Michael Jackson.
I remember very vividly in the mid 80's listening to my new Thriller album. The lyrics were printed on the LP sleeve which I thought was neat.
Around the same time, Michael was very involved in USA for Africa. Similar to Band Aid, a charity album was recorded by the biggest musicians of the day. I know have several recordings in the house somewhere.
Someone had mentioned that MJ didn't just create music videos, the videos created him. A master of both lyric and dance, Michael combined both arts into one fluid expression.
My thoughts go out to Michael's three children and the Jackson family.

I wanted to share a shirt I bought while I was on vacation... There was also a huge memorial at Madame Tussauds including a book where you could write any message. <3 Caitlin

Frankly, I found myself more moived at his passing than I would have suspected I would be. I never really cared that much about his music - but having said this, you dont have to be a fan of Motown to see that he may have been the best overall child performer since we have been recording performance videos.
Thanks to that, and Thriller, I think he became so ubiquitous that he transcended my own personal musical taste and became something of a cultural icon for me whether I liked him or not - and in fairness I did enjoy a few of his songs. He not only formed a great deal of the unconscious soundtrack of my youth and early adulthood - but in many ways he changed the entire model of the way music is performed and marketed.
He may of course, also provide a cautionary tale about the dangers of being too gifted and having too much success too young - but even here there may be more than one side to the story. He had children who obviously loived him.....
RIP Michael. I will miss you
