i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifOn TV One News tonight in NZ they showed the You Tube movie of Susan Boyle. She is 47 years old and looks like the most unmusical person there (like Paul Potts was) but her version of I Dreamed A Dream brought the house down. It was brilliant. You must see it on You Tube.

Hi,
Funny you mention this, Ross..... Today in dutch newspapers, the same thing... Susan Boyle mentioned, doing Brittain Gots Talent, and i had a watch on You Tube..................... I read she already has a recorddeal/contract !!! I loved her performance, had the idea, that it was something very easy for her to do !!! I guess the next time we'll see her, hairdressers and make up artists will change her image.

Hello Ross and Joyce! I'm surprised that nobody from the UK has followed up on this story about Susan Boyle (until now!), it's a strange thing about this internet Age that I found out about it from members in NZ and The Netherlands! Anyway, whenever I hear about new "next best thing" singers, I am always sceptical and at first, I tend to ignore such claims, but after a while if the hype (and there's always hype) continues, I will check them out. I ignored this thread but when BBC Radio five Live (the UK speech and sports station) spent ten minutes discussing Susan Boyle, playing an extract from her first performance, I remembered this thread and I decided to check it out... and I was impressed enough to investigate. I have located what I think is the best YouTube clip so far (one of the few with the correct widescreen aspect ratio) which is here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxPZh4AnWyk&feature=related but it omits the preliminary 90 seconds background report on her so anyone who likes it may wish to download a complete high quality version (60 MB) that I found on Usenet, courtesy of "DVDPhyle": www.daveludlow.com/music/various/audiovideo/2009/britainsgottalent/2009episode1_Britains.Got.Talent.2009.Susan.Boyle.First.Performance.avi (60 MB widescreen xvid) The hype (especially from the Judges, presenters in the wings and some clearly pre-arranged audience shots) is blatantly obvious - and unfortunately, the persistent audience cheering makes it difficult to form a fair judgement about Susan's true singing abilities. It was all built around a stereotype: that a middle aged and definitely unglamourous woman would not sing well, least of all as well as Elaine Paige. So when she clearly could sing very well indeed, the audience was pleasantly surprised and reacted accordingly. The judges must, of course, have known all this beforehand, having heard her before. I remain a bit sceptical but I now want to hear her sing (without constant audience applause) in future episodes of this TV show. From this one performance (audience interference and all) I would say that she may be a "better singer" (whatever that means) than both Paul Potts and Faryl Smith, in which case, she will do very well indeed. In weeks to come, we shall see. Incidentally, I am making make no allowance for age when comparing these three singers. Cheers, Dave

Isn't she great !
How appropriate her contestant number is a countdown number
4 3 2 1
A countdown to success I hope !
Amanda's body language tells us she knew what was coming, a receptive / submissive pose.
Most of us probably know great singers and performers in local amateur musical societies and performing groups who will never enter a competition like this, they will never attempt to be famous, Happy entertaining on a local level for charity or community or church and never seeking the worldwide attention they could justifiably command

I try to avoid these kind of shows where possible. I don't like how they blatantly influence the viewers opinions, with OTT reactions and comments from the judges.
She has a very good voice, but why won't the audience let her sing without screaming and applauding?

Hi all,
I did see something on MSN.com about this. It had Susan's photo with the caption "from Scotland, the next biggest singer" or something like that.
She has definitely got talent and I hope she does very well in the competition!
Cheers, Joe

Hmm, wouldn't it be sweet if Connie Talbot, Faryl Smith and Susan Boyle formed a trio and proceeded to take over the world? It could happen!

She has a good voice but it remains to be seen if a Church volunteer who's led a quiet life can cope with fame, the media and fans. She won't win for the same reason that Faryl didn't win last year. Most people who vote on this show are teenagers with their mobile phones who vote for boy bands and dance groups and are very unlikely to vote for an older performer. Interestingly Faryl said on ITV yesterday that she thought Fearless would make the final.

Well she may indeed have a good voice, but as I said above, we don't yet know because the on-show hype ensured that it was drowned out by the audience!
Cheers, Dave

The biggest development today is that Ms. Boyle has been booked to appear on America's "Oprah Winfrey Show" which will catapult her to a level of stardom far beyond what Mr. Cowell's show would typically offer. Practically overnight she's gone viral, global, and now no longer needs BGT to advance her career.

Practically overnight she's gone viral, global, and now no longer needs BGT to advance her career. That doesn't suprise me. I think its irrelevant who wins this show, as Simon Cowell and Co. will again make a fortune from the artists they choose to push. First, there was the cute 6 year old, the choirboy who was bullied, now this woman. They know how to pull at people's heart-strings and they know what sells. It seems like Cowell uses his contacts (such as Oprah) to really promote someone, that he can make a mint from.
