WEST End star Connie Fisher is heading for Furness.
The actress and singer, who starred as Maria in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s revival of the Sound of Music, will perform in Barrow on May 21.
The winner of the BBC show, How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, is bringing her Secret Love concert to Forum 28.
Barrow is the only north west venue of her 11-date tour before she starts the Sound of Music UK tour.
The album Secret Love includes 11 of her favourite stage and film tunes.
These include I Could Have Danced All Night, Secret Love, Someone to Watch Over Me, Buddy Holly’s True Love Ways, and a new Lloyd Webber number called First Impression Counts.
She has given the songs a smoky, Blues-like twist, making them completely different from the original versions.
The star will be touring with her musicians, who will include the Raven String Quartet and special guest Will Martin.
Tickets go on sale at Forum 28 on Wednesday.
They cost £25 for adults and £23 for concessions.
Joanne Marwood, programming officer at Forum 28, said: “This is very exciting for us as she is only doing 11 tour dates and Barrow is the only one in the north west.”
Mrs Marwood thinks the show will attract a similar audience to Barrow’s sellout Hayley Westenra show in October.
Connie Fisher recently starred in They’re Playing Our Song alongside Alastair McGowan at The Menier Chocolate Factory.
At Christmas she made her small-screen debut in the lead role for the ITV1 drama, Caught in a Trap, playing a woman obsessed with Elvis Presley memorabilia.
She also stars in the film the Wedding Dress which is set to do the festival circuit this year.

Raven are coming back to Barrow.

This cross-fertilisation is most interesting, Dean. To my mind it is also a statement that Raven are standing on their own eight feet and being wanted for themselves. If that is the way they want to go it may well not be long before we have Raven hosting concerts inviting singers to join them!

Please note, the concert at Rhyl Pavilion on 25th May is no longer listed for Connie at BAA, but it is listed for Raven. It still appears on Connie's website.

I have just received news from the Fairfield Hall in Croydon to say that Connie's concert on 13th May is cancelled. This caused me to look elsewhere and it would seem that the entire tour is cancelled or, at least, postponed. This appears at the site of the Felixstowe venue:

The Spa Pavilion wishes to announce that Connie Fisher has unfortunately postponed her forthcoming Secret Love Tour.

Confirmation has been received from her management stating that the Sound of Music Star is to go into hospital for an operation and will be unable to work for some considerable time. It is hoped that the date will be rescheduled in the future although no dates are available at this time.

We are obviously disappointed that Connie will not be appearing at The Spa and hope that she will return to the venue in the future once she has made a full recovery. I would like to assure everyone who has already purchased tickets that a full refund will be given.

Sound of Music star Connie Fisher has been forced to cancel her solo tour after being diagnosed with a vocal cord condition.

Vocal specialists in the US have said Fisher, 25, will need surgery if she is ever to perform again.

They said the condition - called congenital fusion anomalies - would have been with her from birth and it was a "miracle" she had ever sung.

Her 14-date Secret Love tour was due to take her across the UK in May and June.

The Pembrokeshire singer won the BBC talent show How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? in 2006.

She played the lead role of Maria in the Sound of Music at the London Palladium and has signed up to play the role again during its national tour, produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The former call centre worker is due to open with the musical at Cardiff's Millennium Centre next August.

Her management could not say if she would continue in the production but said she had to cancel the Secret Love tour, which was due to visit theatres across the UK in May and June, including a return to Wales in Rhyl.

In a statement, her management Bedlam Management Ltd, said: "Following consultations with vocal specialists in the US it has been decided that for Connie Fisher to have any chance to perform again a procedure on her vocal cords has to be carried out.

"Connie's doctor has advised her that the situation she finds herself in has been with her from birth.

"This condition is known as "congenital fusion anomalies", he has said that it is not uncommon in general, however, in singers, he has never experienced or heard of this situation before.

"Effectively how Connie Fisher has ended up having a singing career is nothing short of miracle.

"Connie is obviously very disappointed and upset that she is not able to do the concert tour, but we wish her a full recovery."

Soon after starting as Maria in the Sound of Music at the London Palladium, Fisher was told to cut down the number of shows she performed each week on the advice of doctors.

She also had to take a fortnight off after damaging her vocal cords.

Since leaving the West End musical in 2007, to be replaced by Summer Strallen, Fisher has recorded an album and will soon be seen in ITV drama Caught in a Trap.

This must be devastating news for Connie and I wish her a full and speedy recovery. You can fully understand why Hayley, and indeed most professional singers, go to great lengths to protect their voice. After all, it is their livelihood.
