Classical Sparks Hagley Park
On a lovely fine evening I had a picnic tea while waiting for the concert to start. For pre-concert entertainment there were some young musicians playing.
The concert started with a Maori kapa haka group.
There was a large audience
The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra then played Conquest Of Paradise by Vangelis which is the theme song for our Rugby team the Crusaders. They also had the Crusader horses there too. Then for some fun we had a medieval jouling contest with the men in armour and the horses all dressed up, it was good fun.
The orchestra then did the 3rd movement of Haydn's Trumpet concerto with a solo trumpet.
A young 16yo then did a violin concerto with the orchestra, she was great.
The Southern Opera then joined the orchestra and sang the Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore.
The CSO then finished by playing some music from Pictures at an Exhibition. I recognized the theme song for Rik Mayall's The New Statesman.
After the interval we had the Showbiz Christchurch singers perform some songs from different musicals. They started with an ABBA medley, one lady sung The Winner Takes It All which is my favourite ABBA song. They then did songs from Miss Saigon, some ALW songs, Jekyll and Hide, and The Time Warp song. These were all great as they dressed up in all the costumes for each musical.
Then the finale was the CSO playing the William Tell Overture accompanied by fireworks which you can see here:-
