As mentioned in HWI (although the date has now been changed) Classic FM will present a special four hour chart of the best selling classical CDs this year, from 2pm to 6pm on Bank Holiday Monday next week - August 30th (Classic FM now have the day right but the date wrong, on their web page). Classic FM "charts of the year" are usually from The Official Charts Company and are based on total CD sales (not an average of the weekly chart positions).
So where will Hayley be in next week''s chart? Certainly in the top few - and *possibly* at number 1. Hayley will undoubtedly be the top "Artist" of the year but there will be stiff competition from a few sound tracks and compilation CDs. I think the biggest threat is from "The Lord of the Rings - Return of the King" as that went Gold (100K shipped) in January so it may have sold 100,000 copies this year (but some was last December, when it was released). It also matched Pure very closely in chart positions, throughout January and February, with Pure possibly having the edge. Pure has probably sold over 90,000 copies this year, so it really is too close to call.
No other classical CDs have been awarded Gold or Platinum discs in the UK this year, but a couple have had Silver awards (60K). However, it's possible for a record company to not bother applying for an award to which their CD is entitled, so there could still be a surprise from one of this year's big-selling compilations.
My guess is for Pure to be top and Return of the King 2nd, but obviously I don't know, and it could be the other way round. Anything below 2nd would be disappointing. This would be a massive achievement if Hayley could again take the top position (for the year to date). I can't wait for next Monday's chart show!!!
