I'm saddened to read of the backlash. I haunted Rhydian's forum for a while (I think I will pop over there in a minute and see what you are talking about - and probably tell them off!) and they seemed to be a very open minded group of fans.
I went on there because someone linked my site on there, and I went to read their reactions. I guess even back then I can kind of see where the backlash is coming from, because at the time, they did not like the idea of Rhydian being on my website, as it was 'categorising' him. We did have a long discussion about how important categorisation is to marketing, and how Rhydian does actually fit the crossover mould, and there seemed to be a begrudging agreement by the end of it all.
But I am saddened they are giving him a hard time. He should just do whatever he likes.

Hi Nicola,
I agree. The r-r.co.uk site is a bit more moderate in its views (the fans there are really lovely and welcoming) -- but it's really at the Digital Spy forums where they're dragging him over the coals.
I personally think that Rhydian is doing the right thing -- he can't make an entire career out of rehashing X Factor performances. I don't know if I'm right about this, but I've always got the impression that Rhydian was a classical music student with ginger hair and a love of rugby that got sucked into the SiCo empire and completely re-invented to add pantomine interest factor to the show.
I think this new direction is more him and he should stick to his guns regardless. In one post on one of his forums, I read classical music as being described as 'a lot of humming and grunting in latin or some other unfathomable language' ... I mean really -- he shouldn't be taking these peoples' views seriously.

Digital Spy? He is listening to people on Digital Spy? Why would he do that? They're a mob! It's a forum that holds members of just about every demographic there is - of course there's going to be disagreement on, well, everything! I imagine the only reason DS are being taken seriously is because it's practically the home of X-Factor discussion, it is, therefore, the home of Simon Cowell. If Rhydian was with UCJ, they'd pay no mind. It's the target audience that matters, not the mass general public that won't buy his album either way.

Mmm... probably the sooner Rhydian escapes Simon Cowell's clutches the better. That said, he apparently has the attention span of a goldfish and has moved on to the next 'big thing' -- so has pretty much left Rhydian up to his own devices with this cd (up till now it seems).
I personally thought that 'Our Homeland' was a good title. I'll hate it if this release is dumbed down in an attempt to make it more commercial. Rhydian needs to move on and achieve his potential -- people can find someone else to sing kitsch covers of Ricky Martin's 'She Bangs'.

Thanks Nicola & Jillian, I agree with your general drift & am thrilled to bits with the songs chosen for 'Our Homeland'. Rhydian has certainly proved, as Hayley has, that he can sing "anything" & I'd guess that a large number of his fans may well go with him almost regardless of what he sings. He absolutely fascinates me with his pure ability !!!!! Graeme

Hello I am Clorinda who posted the quote above on I dolforums where I am a member. I think Rhydians voice is a wonderful instrument and I am really excited about his new album. As a result of witnessing Hayley's duet with Rhydian in Cardiff I went to a concert of hers at Gawsworth Hall in Cheshire. It really was a magical evening and Hayley looked very beautiful and sang faultlessly. What a lovely talented person she is. You may be interested to know that Rhydian will join Karl Jenkins as he celebrates his 65th birthday at a special all-Welsh concert at the Wales Millennium Centre. He has been confirmed as a special guest at the gala evening on Saturday 14 November 2009 . The concert is an all-Welsh celebration of Karl Jenkins’ work and is being staged in association with the National Assembly for Wales to mark; the tenth anniversary of devolution in Wales and Wales Millennium Centre’s fifth birthday. The concert will feature the premiere of Jenkins’ new work, which has been specially commissioned to mark a decade of devolution in Wales. I am lucky enough to be going and am counting the days.

Have fun, Clorinda! Welcome to HWI! I too am very interested in Rhydian's new work -- I'd observed Rhydian's career from the sidelines in the past, but when I heard that he was teaming up with Karl Jenkins on his new album I immediately was very curious. If Rhydian settles himself down into the Classical Cross Over genre, hopefully we'll see another duet! The genre is very incestuous (lol in the nicest possible way ) and everyone duets with everyone else, so it will definitely be a possibility. Hayley has a new album out in the UK on 16 November, so perhaps that might be something that you can distract yourself with while you wait for Rhydian's album on the 30th.

Hi Jillian & welcome Clorinda. Interestingly ( ) I had just been listening to Rhydian's 'Imp. Dream', 'Not a Dry Eye', 'Music of the Night' AND "that duet." I had not checked HWI at all today until a couple of minutes ago. You've both reinforced my incredible admiration for both Hayley & Rhydian. WOWWWWW !!! Graeme

Thankyou for the welcome Graeme I believe the Karl Jenkins concert will be televised on a British TV channel called S4C on November 21st and hopefully Rhydians performance will be up on You Tube shortly afterwards if you are interested.

I check youtube often to see if I've missed something, whether RR or HW. I download them too in case they get scrubbed off. I keep wanting to list the resulting vids to see what is really there, but have still not got around to it. Graeme Graeme

Hi everyone Not posted here before but have come across this thread. I am a huge supporter of Rhydian from day 1 - for me, he has the most incredible voice I have ever heard in my life. I do love Hayley's voice and the icing on the cake was when she and Rhydian sang their duet together during his tour, All I ask of You. Quite simply it was pure magic, they had a chemistry which I have never seen before when Hayley has sung with other artists. Referring to Nicola's post, well said! Certain so called supporters of Rhyd should be hanging their heads in shame in what they have said on DS. (Idol Forums is by far a better Rhydian thread, very positive and constructive posts especially from Robert). For me it really doesn't matter what he sings, it is the voice - he has been classically trained and he should follow that dream. However, got to say, he is absolutely amazing in concert and truly a sight to see in full flight with an up tempo song. I managed to get front row during his tour and believe me, this young man does not take any prisoners, trust me!!! A mesmerising evening I shall remember for the rest of my life. I hope one day Hayley and Rhyd will get together again for another duet, one that will be recorded on an album, perhaps Hayley's. I don't think we have seen the last of these two together. I am counting down the days until O Fortuna is released, this will really showcase his voice - I hope some of you treat yourself to this album, I am pretty certain you will not be disappointed. Here is Toreador - please ignore the dancers, I do!!! Enjoy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=iA9v25-ceIA
