Westenra not pigeon-holed

THE outstanding voice of Hayley Westenra saw her acclaimed this year as ‘the biggest selling classical artist of the 21st century’. But New Zealand star Hayley does not want to see herself pigeon-holed into a box marked “classical” .

“I know my media image is as a classical singer, but I don’t really see it like that,’’ she says. ‘‘I see myself as a singer, full stop. I’m certainly not an opera singer and although I perform classical music I’m also a singer that performs folk and pop.”

She is proving this with a varied repertoire in her current 17-concert British tour which comes to Birmingham Town Hall next Thursday. It features material like Songbird and Danny Boy as well as Ave Maria and Benedictus.

A similar mix is also featured on her new album, River of Dreams, which has seen huge sales since it was released at the end of last month. The CD also includes Summer Rain which she wrote herself.

Hayley is looking forward to visiting Birmingham after being impressed by the acoustics at Symphony Hall where she appeared last year.

“The Birmingham audience was great and the brilliant hall made a huge difference for the performer and the audience. I hear that the Town Hall is equally outstanding.”

Tomorrow Hayley will be performing before the Queen at the Festival of Remembrance in the Royal Albert Hall and she is also contributing to the Cenotaph Remembrance on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month on Tuesday.

Her involvement with Remembrance Day started last month when she went to Basra with a Royal British Legion group to launch the Poppy Day Appeal and entertain our troops.

Next year, 21-year-old Hayley will be touring her New Zealand homeland and Japan, where she is hugely popular.

Hi Graeme and everyone,

that's interesting I wonder just when Hayley will be touring here? Normally tours this end follow on from her holiday break while in this part of the world. I thought Hayley was touring with Jonathan Ansell in Feb next year so it won't be after her holiday break,unless it is a short tour at the end of Jan.

Roger know anything about this at all?

You may need to put your thinking cap on, but hey! Hayley is in Japan March/April as per the thread HERE Her last concert in Japan is on the 5th April so Hayley could fly home afterwards, spend her birthday with family and friends, then follow it with a New Zealand tour in plenty of time to be back in the UK for her May commitments.

Just a thought

I'll keep this brief because it doesn't really belong in this thread.

The speculation that a NZ tour may take place in March or April is probably about right. When we have any firm information, we will start a new thread (or, perhaps, a series of threads). Until then, let's not play guessing games in a discussion that is supposed to be about the Birmingham concert.
