I suspect it's a pretty equal blend of both. Certainly, it was a mistake Katherine made in her youth, prior to her fame, and in that light cannot be a "premeditated" publicity stunt. But it is most definitely not a coincidence, and not an uncalculated move to release the information at this particular point in her career. (And if Katherine was only concerned about preempting any "spills" of the story, there would have been much more quiet ways to go about it than the way she did.)
