Hello Mary! The concert is being recorded by iTunes, so they may need to do retakes. I would expect it to finish by 10:00pm, probably much earlier, but I'm only guessing. See you there, Richard

they are covering itunes on ITV2 but as far as I have seen in the programming Hayley won't be covered. They are doing 30 min clips of the more "popular" bands

However, I do wonder what makes it a "disgrace". I am guesssing that the program is simply featuring as many of the most popular groups as they can in their alloted time slot. As much as we like Hayley I doubt seriously that she is perceived to be in say the top 10 artists of all genres in the UK at the present time. (The same program running in 2003 or 2004 might have produced a different result). This is the catch 22 of all niche artists. If they were more popular they would get more mainstream coverage - and if they got more coverage they might become more popular. But as it stands, I suspect this is purely a bottom line driven decision on their part - just like most business decisions are made. Jon

Jon Hi Jon I dont think you are quite right here as I can think of no one more popular than Hayley in her class of music and she is certainly amongst the top 10 artistes of all genres in the UK at present and her slot should be featured on ITV coverage of itunes automatically. You only need to look at the full houses she attracts at her concerts anywhere in the UK to realise her popularity. I cannot think of a more popular "niche artist" than Hayley! Ron

Ron Hi Ron, I need to emphasize that I am not trying to be critical. I am simply trying to evaluate the state of things the way they are. I wish they were different as much as anyone. This being said, I was under the impression that Katherine Jenkins outsells her about 3 to 1 (give or take) within the UK. While some of Katherine's albums dont make the classical chart iin the UK, I would personally classify them both as classical crossover singers - and Hayley therefore isnt even number 1 in her own genre. Dave would know more about this than I do, but most numbers I have seen suggest that classical music in the UK (and I am assuming they define the genre the same way in those numbers as they do on the charts) is currently somewhere between 6 and 7 percent of the total music sold. So, since Hayley is in a niche market, and isnt even number one in that niche, I have a hard time accepting that she is necessarily a big enough fish to warrent inclusion in the televised coverage of this event.. Which is not to say it wouldnt be nice if she were included..... Jon

Well, that's another event over and I have to say it was somewhat different to what I had expected. First of all, we were treated to about 45 minutes from the Ahn Trio. They are three sisters from New York who play piano, violin and cello. One of our party thoroughly enjoyed their performance but I think the rest of us were less appreciative of their musical style. That is no criticism of their ability - it was just not to our taste.
The trio had a huge surprise for us, however. Midway through their set, Lucia Ahn left the stage and their special guest was introduced who would play the piano for the next two numbers. If I say the next piece we heard was 'The Piano' from the film of the same name, does that give you a clue? Anyone who said Michael Nyman, have a house point!
After a short interval, Hayley appeared and sang a total of 13 songs. As her performance was being recorded for eventual download at iTunes, I think we all expected to hear new material from her. Yes, we got 'Songbird' (which she has, of course, performed at least twice recently) but everything else appears on one or other of her existing albums. Nevertheless, it was nice to hear the arrangements for piano (Simon Lole) and string quartet (the Ravens). The complete songlist is as follows:
Pokarekare Ana Ave Maria (Caccini) Scarborough Fair Prayer Shenandoah Both Sides Now Danny Boy
Hayley now left the stage to the Raven Quartet who played three pieces before Hayley returned:
In Trutina Songbird May It be Santa Lucia Lascio Ch'io Pianga Hine e Hine
I regret to say that the photographic evedence of tonight's performance is likely to be minimal. All professional looking cameras were confiscated on the way in and, naturally, most compact cameras would have struggled in the very limited light. I know a few members tried but we shall have to wait to see how successful they might have been.
Apparently, Hayley promised to come out to see us after the show but, unfortunately, I had to depart before that happened in order to catch my last train home. Hopefully, others will report on the meeting that I missed!
Roger

Hi Roger,
This sounded like a great event. Thanks for including Hayley's set list in your wonderful report.
Sorry to read that the camera police were on patrol. I hope we are treated to a few very discreet photos!
Thanks again, Joe
