Sigur Ros

Hi All,

I have been wondering if anybody here knows or likes the Icelandic band Sigur Ros?

I've just finished watching their music DVD film 'Heima'. It is the about thr 5th time I have watched it now, a stunningly beautiful film, following their return to Iceland where they played a series of free unannounced concerts in different locations, both big small, accompanied by stunning scenery of Iceland's unique landscape that captures not only the beauty of the music, but also the beauty and culture of Iceland itself - It is easy to see where their inspiration comes from.

The music is perfect just to sit back and relax to. I never really know how to describe their music, it's very experimental, unique and it doesn't know limitations of musical genres, they use different styles and each song is unique in it's own way from any other they have done. If you haven't heard them it is really something that you have to hear for yourself.

I've never really thought of them as being Classical before, but they experiment with it, Jonsi Birgisson plays his guitar with a cello bow, they are always accompanied by a string quartet and have actually performed with a choir and an orchestra for a song on their next album

I was still surprised to see they had a profile at Classic FM though which is part of the reason I decided to start this topic.

I certainly do - my son and youngest daughter are both great fans. My son went to see them live not long ago too

The song perhaps alot of people would know is 'Hoppipolla' its been used on a number of TV adverts etc. Infact, my daughter has the sheet music and plays it on the piano.

I also listen to thier music - its very restful and quite different to Hayley.

Hi Dazza

I like Sigur Ros too. I first heard of them through the Planet Earth trailers when Hippipolla was played. I only have Takk as a CD - do you know or recommend any others?

Hi Mark & Colin,

I also first discovered them after hearing 'Hoppipolla', I think it was on the radio, I went out and brought Takk straight away and the other albums soon followed.

Colin, I'd recommend them all

Particually Agaetis Byrjun which in my opinion is better than Takk, ( ) is also an excellent album. I don't think Von is as good as the others but still ok. Hvarf-Heim is superb but as they are re-workings of previous songs you really need to have heard the other albums first.

One thing which is an absolute must though if you like Sigur Ros is the DVD 'Heima', it's just stunning.

Thanks for the info. I've tracked down - but not yet bought - the DVD on Amazon and it sounds interesting. Once I've caught up with all of Hayley's imminent releases I'll look into getting some more from them.

My youngest daughter Sophie is also a fan and she found a concert they are holding at the Wolverhampton Civic Centre on the 4th November. Hi Mark,

I booked through the Sigur Ros official website and there was only one option which was 'general admission' so I guess I will have to wait for the ticket to arrive to see where I am.

I am really looking forward to it, I have wanted to go and see them live since I saw their DVD. It is certainly going to be something different.

I think that their latest album 'Med sud i eyrum vid spilum endalaust' which was sprung upon us out of the blue last month is absolutely fantastic and is in my opinion, their best one yet.

Well, what a change from a Hayley concert I have to say though, last nights concert was spectacular - what a unique and very talanted group they are.

I was looking out for you Dazza but obviously didn't see you - were you standing in the stalls ?

My daughter took quite alot of photos and some video - I may post a couple of shots if I can later.

Hi Mark,

I am so sorry I forgot to mention but I wasn't able to go in the end, I was going to tell you in Stoke but it completely slipped my mind. I never actually realised it was yesterday, I was able to sell my ticket.

It is a shame as I was really looking forward to seeing them live, I imagine that it is quite unique. I am very happy to hear that you enjoyed the concert.
