Microsoft's Live Search has a special feature called Celebrity X Rank (beta) which ranks the popularity of famous people (particularly in the US), and charts their rise and fall. As of today (April 16, 2007) , Hayley ranks 3,074 of 6482, with her popularity soaring. search.live.com/xrank (Search Hayley Westenra for results) It will be interesting to see how she moves through this chart, hopefully up! Here are today's top 5: 1. Mariah Carey 2. Lil Wayne 3. Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana) 4. Chris Brown 5. Well, you all must have done something, because she's all ready at 2,969. The Ranking is based on how many searches are performed on that person. So, it's a great way to see how "search-popular" Hayley is. |

If we could get her in the top 10, thousands would look her up just to see who she is.
Then if they hear her sing we have them.

At the moment, she's back up a little, to 2,854, just above Hayley Mills! I noticed she's higher than Katherine Jenkins. I'm sure it's partly because she's more popular in the U.S., which is probably due to her tour with Celtic Woman. I'm guessing she's more well-known in other regions of the world than Katherine is, too. Also, Hayley's music style and voice probably appeal to a wider audience than Katherine's. Of course, it's no surprise that Josh Groban is in 2nd place out of the artist category. I wish Hayley could be at the top, too! What I did find surprising was that only 4 of the American Idol contestants can even be found here, and the one just voted off ranks higher than the 3 that are still there! Kristy Lee Cook is at 148, Jason Castro (my favorite) is at 167, Carly Smithson is 951, and Syesha Mercado is at 2,352! But I guess you Brits don't care much about that!  |

Sorry to correct you Graham but we do see it in the UK on ITV2. I have seen most of the series so far and, to my slight surprise, I am quite enjoying it. To get back on topic(!), Hayley's XRank is now 2726; a slight improvement on the last report.

I think the only true, permanent way to get Hayley up is to increase the general public's awareness of her so that they want to look her up. Another big solo tour of the US might help (hint hint). We HWI-ers can type Hayley's name in the box as many times as we want. But it doesn't compare to the myriads who prefer to search for Miley Cyrus (current No.1). |

Actually, I had never heard of Miley Cyrus until a few weeks ago when she guested on American Idol. I imagine some of our members still don't know her so this poll has at least introduced her name to them. Hopefully, others will come to know Hayley by the same means. I am sure Hayley would love to tour the US but, unless she can be guaranteed to have sell-out concerts at all venues, it could prove very costly. Also, while she was there, she would not be capitalizing on her success here and elsewhere. We therefore have a catch-22 situation whereby she needs to tour the US to become better known, but she needs to be much better known to enable her to tour the US.  Anyway, next time I see her I will tell her you asked and we'll see what happens! Roger |
