High Simba, Richard and everyone I'm certain that Sophie has not been cut and pasted into the image. Whilst pretty much anything is possible nowadays with photo imaging software, the water reflection of the pattern of Sophie's dress on her right thigh would be very difficult to replicate. My guess would be that it is a tidal beach and the water has washed away Sophie's foot steps. Highly likely to that a very small aperture was used going by the small grease spot just to the left of Sophie's right calf. Me thinks the photographer needs to get his sensor cleaning kit out! Best wishes Grant

Gosh, I've just realised I didn't put that very well did I? well, in my defense I had just completed a three hour history and then a 2 and a half hour French paper haha- so my brain was somewhat all over the place!...Better get back to some last-minute revision of my English exam tomorrow morning...if I can...my mum's been sent to hospital and I'm finding it very hard to concentrate on anything... back on topic, I really love these photos, Sophie looks so like her sister, they seem to do pretty much the same facial expressions when they're posing... I was also a bit mystified by the last picture without footprints too..it's been interesting reading your responses best wishes Sing

Well, as far as I know about it, it could be either way, but I still think she was really there. They do have beaches in NZ, you know.

Hi Sing! That's a great find! Thanks for posting the link to the pictures! The last one looks like been taken at New Brighton beach, CHCH. So no reason for cutting and pasting into the picture when having the beach more or less at the doorstep. Thomas

Thomas Hi Thomas yep your right,in the background is the pier which is where New Brighton shopping area is.In the background behind the pier is Ferrymead and Redcliffs on the way to Sumner.I would guess the photo would have been taken just north of the pier about 2 to 300 meters north. cheers, Rodders

Happy Birthday Sophie! And Hello Grant, the funny thing is, the light pattern on Sophie's left leg in that pic is not to be mistaken with "caustics" (or reflection as you say it to be), but simply light passing through the holes, of the dress (forming a pattern), so this has got nothing to do with water, and would have appeared anywhere else too. And Not necessarily, just because you have a beach closeby doesn't mean you have to go there to take the pic, who knows, Sophie didn't want to get her legs wet, so finally, after a bit of close analyzation, notice the circled and arrowed places, it looks blured than the rest of the pics, the edges, clearly it was edited, and finally the hair is where it really gives it away, the left side is blured much while the right is not, hair is difficult to cut out, so generally they blur it to make it look okay...So I'm pretty sure it's edited, Like it even matters anyway LOLZ

With all due respect to those who've gone to great lengths to demonstrate otherwise, my hunch is that this pic in question is an actual, albeit miraculous, shot. If it were an elaborate cut 'n' paste photoshop maneuver, wouldn't that be transparent to any professional photographer and wouldn't that downgrade the value of this image? I doubt that anyone trying to make a name for himself in that competitive field (which this photographer clearly is) would resort to deception just to produce a "wow" when the risk of being called out in these especially-cynical times is so high.

A valid point Steve. As a photographer, I was basing my conclusions on techniques; shutter speeds and knowledge of lighting. With such a low resolution image, it's impractical to do otherwise. Best wishes Grant

Yeah, that's the only reason I thought the photo could've been real as well, who knows XD Maybe no one would bother either way....
