Odyssey - 8th Most Popular Album in NZ in 2005

Hayley's "Odyssey" was the eighth most popular album in New Zealand in 2005, according to stuff.co.nz.

Wellington band Fat Freddy's Drop has been named the most successful local act on 2005 album charts, according to the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand.

Their album Based On A True Story was the second best selling album of the year, pipped at the post by British artist James Blunt's Back To Bedlam.

Based On A True Story spent six weeks at top of the chart, equalling Split Enz' Time And Tide which set the benchmark in 1982. The only other local album by a band to spend longer on top is Crowded House's Recurring Dream which stayed at No 1 for eight weeks in 1996.

Hayley Westenra's Odyssey was the eighth most popular album for the 12 months. Westenra's Pure was the seventh highest selling album in 2004.

Savage was the only local act to make it into the Top 10 Singles Chart – with two entries, Moonshine, featuring US rapper Akon was the third highest selling single, and Swing was eighth.

This year 20 New Zealand artists featured in the top 100 chart albums for 2005, compared with 23 in 2004. There were 16 local artists in the top 100 singles chart in both years.

Thanks for posting that Richard, I haven't commented so far as I needed to verify that this chart is based on sales not chart points (as in all previous years). I am delighted to confirm that, for the first time ever, the chart IS based on true over-the-counter sales. This is what the official charts people RIANZ have to say about it:: "The figures are compiled by Media Sauce Ltd. for the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ) which has just released The Official Chart sales data for the year to December 31 for across-the-counter sales to consumers." Welcome to the twenty-first century, RIANZ! I will now be adding a shortened version of this to my annual charts thread.. All this means that Odyssey was the No. 2 album by a NZ artist in 2005.

How do we know the 2004 and earlier charts are NOT sales based? Well, it's easy - you can see from www.rianz.org.nz/rianz/chart_annual.asp that In 2003, "Pure" is listed as the no. 11 album for the year. But we know from the NZ Music Awards and the no. of platinum discs that Pure was actually the best selling NZ album of that year (in the 2004 awards). In 2004, Yulia's "Into the West" is listed as no. 13 for the year but again, it was the best selling NZ album of 2004 (in the 2005 awards).

But now, at last, they have published a real sales chart.

Hayley's music DVD was the no. 10 best seller for 2005 and is the ONLY NZ DVD in the top 10 - Hayley at no. 1 !.
