Big News for The Cottars
BOSTON, MA – (JBS) Today The Cottars announced that they have signed a multi-album recording contract with legendary American independent folk and roots label Rounder Records. They have entered the studio immediately to begin recording their third album, a yet untitled project which is being produced by Gordie Sampson in Nashville, TN, and will be released by Rounder Records with a tentative date of January 10, 2006.
The release date will be timed to accompany the start of a 25-city U.S. tour opening for Celtic music giants The Chieftains.
The Cottars' tour as guests of The Chieftains will kick off in Amarillo, TX on January 16th, 2006, with tour stops throughout the western U.S. through January. It will resume in South Bend, IN on March 2nd, 2006 and continue through the eastern states, climaxing at Carnegie Hall on Saint Patrick's Day. The pairing of Celtic music’s greatest band with one of its brightest young acts was the brainchild of The Cottars' Canadian booking agency, Jensen Music International, and was concluded with the help of the group's Boston-based management, McDermott Entertainment, in conjunction with the Chieftains’ Macklam/Feldman Management team of Vancouver, BC.
The Cottars will tour throughout 2006: after The Chieftains tour, they are planning dates throughout the U.S. and Canada, including an Ontario tour from April 7-15 and appearances at many of the premiere North American summer music festivals, and an extended U.S. performing arts center tour in the Fall. Their U.S. booking is now managed by recent addition The Val Denn Agency.
Additional plans for 2006-2007 include tour dates in Australia, Europe and Japan, and a concert special for network television broadcast and DVD.
The Cottars consist of two brother-sister pairs from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia:
Jimmy MacKenzie (age 18): Guitar, Banjo, Bodhran;
Roseanne MacKenzie (age 15): Fiddle, Whistle, Harmony Vocals, Step-dancing;
Ciaran MacGillivray (age 17): Piano, Guitar, Vocals, Whistle, Bodhran, Step-dancing;
Fiona MacGillivray (age 16): Lead Vocals, Whistle, Bodhran, Harp, Step-dancing.
Since forming in 2001, they have performed hundreds of tour dates across North America, Europe and Japan, recorded two critically-acclaimed, self-released albums "Made In Cape Breton" (2002) and "On Fire!" (2004), and built a devoted grassroots fan base. ECMA’s followed both releases: Best New Artist (2003); and Best Roots/Traditional (2005). Their new relationship with Rounder will give The Cottars wider distribution throughout North America, and the invaluable backing of a hugely successful independent label with over 35 years of experience in marketing folk and roots artists. The Cottars are proud to join a roster which includes acts such as Alison Krauss & Union Station and Natalie MacMaster.
"We're excited - we have watched The Cottars grow as a band for nearly three years now," said Ken Irwin, one of Rounders Records' founders. "With a young band you want to be certain that they are in it for the long haul, and The Cottars clearly are. We signed Alison Krauss as a teenager as well, and we hope to cultivate a similar path to success for The Cottars."
