I hope you enjoyed your canal holiday, Grant. A one-off or are you a keen follower of the canals as well as the railways? A friend of mine and one of the Hayters is a keen canal enthusiast but i can't remember which one. If its Stuart who is the school headmaster then it is Steve who has or had his own boat. The friend for whom I regulalrly house-, plant-, cat- and now dog-sit has her place on the canalside, sufficiently close as to have her own narrow boat moored outside the front door!

Ah well, if you want to wax lyrical, Andrew then I might instead have replied to Grant:
There, where the willow weeps and the dog rose shines, where the elder flowers and convolvulous Insidiously entwines, choking beauty with its own view of life; there, Rounding a curve, heading for the lock, a holiday barge with a boy and girl Musing, making eyes, lost in their own multi-faceted world, Ripples the glass, distorts reflections; disturbs so many other worlds Inconsequential to our eyes, unseen, unknown, unheard...
from 'Grand Union, Berkhamsted'

Hi Marianne, Wow... Well done you! What a nice selection of "covers" you have picked from your linen cupboard! Did you keep your records in there for a particular reason? Maybe you were a "closet DJ" of a "pirate" radio station which operated from the hidden depths of your linen/ laundry cupboard? or perhaps you thought it would be handy to keep the records there so that you could play them whenever it was time to get the ironing board out? Heh-heh! So what have we got then? 'I Found Someone' by 'Cher'. I guess any song by Cher could be regarded as a "classic pop song". That particular record made it to #5 in the UK pop charts in 1987. Did it reach #1 in Australia? I guess 'If I Could Turn Back Time' we'd be able to find out! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif 'Here I Go Again' by 'Whitesnake'... yes I remember that song very well because I had the 'Whitesnake' album on cassette, ironically entitled, '1987' featuring the hit single, 'Here I Go Again' along with other numbers like the much better version of 'Crying In The Rain' which was previously released on the album entitled, 'Saints and Sinners' (1983)- I had that one too! If you were ever into 'Deep Purple' you will probably know that the lead singer from 'Whitesnake', David Coverdale was also previously the lead vocalist of 'Deep Purple', replacing Ian Gillan in 1974, the year when the album entitled, 'Stormbringer' was released. Anyway, back on track to 1987... 'Never Gonna Give You Up' by Rick Astley... that was one of several pop hits for Rick Astley from producers 'Stock Aitken & Waterman' in the 1980s wasn't it? Incidentally you will probably remember that 'Stock, Aitken & Waterman' also helped to launch the likes of Kylie Minogue with her first hit single, which was a cover of 'The Locomotion' the year after (1988)? '(I've had) The Time Of My Life' ... Heh-heh, I can remember that my French teacher at school at the time in 1987, was totally crazy about that song and the film 'Dirty Dancing' too... She even tried to teach us the lyrics of that song in French! Time to delve back into the archives again Marianne ("not 'alf!")... Do you have any more discs in there from 1987? I'm very impressed! Formidable! Thanks, Andrew

Hi Andrew & Peter
I have to admit that I don't remember that particular song - maybe if I heard it, it may jog my memory - very appropriate words though.
I spent several years holidays on narrowboats in the 80's mainly because there was a girl I liked who used to go!
When I realised that I was "chasing rainbows" I booked myself a round the world trip for 1990 but that's another story!!

Hi Marianne. I see from the photo of your 7" singles that the record companies were just as mean in Australia as the were in Ireland in 1987. You just got your record in a miserable paper bag with hole in each side. Picture sleeves on 7 inch singles were the norm in Britain from the late 60s. They just made records more interesting and more collectible. On the subject of record companies. Do you all remember the slogan "HOME TAPING IS KILLING MUSIC" it was more likely the "Music Industry" was killing music with its desire to manufacture "PRODUCT" for the marketplace as it saw us, the record buying public. I had better stop now as the "music industry" is my favourite soap box rant ! Aggghhh! comet

Hi Andrew & everyone This is a great thread Andrew and I am certainly learning something about the music & films that were around during the late 1980's - 1987 in particular. I am sorry to say though that I remember very little of that period in terms of music etc. although I can say that I have always been a fan of Star Trek and was aware of the movie of that year. Perhaps I should explain, hopefully without giving you my life history !! But also why for me 1987 was a life changing year. My wife & I married at age 19 (yes this year will be our 29th anniversery and within 2 years (1980) we had sold our first house and using everything we had, we purchased a retail business. Within the following 4 years, we purchased 2 more businesses - running 3 at once. During this period, we also gave birth to 2 of our children. In amongst dealing with staff & payrolls, VAT returns ( thats Value Added Tax for those of you who don't live in the UK) accountants, banks & customers, plus family life, you could say the 1980's passed me by in a blur !! It was this thread though that made me look back at some old papers in the loft and, yes, it WAS April 1987 when I decided to sell off the businesses and change my life !! Reading about the music, films artists & actors around at this time, as more of you contribute, is sort of filling in a gap for me. Keep it going and I might soon be up to speed - all be it 20 years late ! Best regards Mark.

Best regards Mark. Hi Mark, Glad to hear that you're enjoying this thread too! Yes, I'm delighted that members of the Forum are helping to remind me of some of the highlights from 1987 too... I'm sure there will still be plenty which haven't been mentioned yet! Regards, Andrew

It just makes me realise how old I am and how young she is and .... oh dear... I'm nearing my end while the half-century I've lived she (God willing) has ahead of her . long slide into depression But Hayley, remember what George Burns said: 'I'm not at all surprised I'm 84. What does surprise me is the speed with which I got here!' Live each moment fully, Hayley and take out time 'to be'. Peter S.
