I believe that is true. I know she definately has Welsh in her but I'm not 100% sure about the Irish.

Hayley appears in the family tree of the Buxton family(from Staffordshire, England... near the town of Buxton Derbyshire, where I once worked!). The link is - if it's correct - on her father's side. If it's correct, it does not, of course, rule out an Irish and Welsh connection, too! Homepage: www.buxtonfamilies.com/index.asp Hayley: www.buxtonfamilies.com/ghtout/gp133.htmlThe Origins page says that John Buxton and his family emigrated from England to Christchurch NZ between 1857 and 1862. It's fascinating to follow it through on the Family Tree pages. The line goes: John Buxton; Joseph Buxton; Eva Buxton (who married William Wardell); Dorothy Wardell (who married Henry Menzies); Patricia Menzies (who married Aylmer Westenra); Gerald Westenra; Hayley. How's about that, then?

Hi,
I remember reading Hayley had Dutch and Irish ancestry. The name Westenra is Dutch I think. Also there is a castle in Ireland called Westenra so they might have some links back to that.
But I did'nt know about the Welsh part, interesting.

I can vouch for the part that Westenra (though not a very common name here in Holland) has Dutch roots as well. I haven't really gone into this. Still, with all these multinational links, this is well and truley... HW International Cheers, Gerrit

Thanks Joe, all I had was a bookmark for the site, I'd completely forgotten about the earlier thread! It makes fascinating reading again... and saves everyone going over the same ground again. I think your find was one of the earliest examples of ferreting in the forum! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifCheers, Dave

I have just been reading the mini bio in the A4 book that came with Odyssey. Funnily enough, it acknowledges the fact that Hayley has Welsh and Irish ancestors.
How clever of them to pre-empt our question that was only asked yesterday!

When she emailed me years ago she said that her grandmother or great grandmother (I can't remember exactly!) was from Cork, which is a beautiful place in the south of Ireland!

Hello Chungchungxavier! I believe Hayley has a great great grandparent on her mother's side of the family who was a Maori. Best Wishes from London, Richard

The Westenra name must have been an important name in County Monaghan, Ireland, as there is still a hotel named The Westenra Arms in Monaghan Town. The fact that the Irish songs has been passed down to Hayley from her grandmother may suggest Irish ancestry too. Also, isn't Hayley's grandmother's surname, Ireland? Surely, that proves Hayley has Irish ancestry!

Hayley tells about her ancestry in her book. Her father's family apparently emigrated from Holland to Ireland.
