I'm thinking of treating myself to a laptop for Xmas (or more likely in the Boxing day sales!) I'd welcome any advice about which one to go for. Obviously I'd want decent sound quality since I'd be spending most of the time watching music videos by you know who but I don't have much space so I can't be doing with cables all over the place which you seem to get with conventional PCs. Any ideas guys ?!

Hi Jeff,
The many computer experts on HWI should be the best help.
We have 4 Dells in the family; A PC and 3 laptops. No problems, unlike our previous computers.
So, personally, I'd recommend 'Dell'. - A range of laptops for various needs; - You can customise your laptop with whatever features you want; - Great online back up if problems arise.
They usually have frequent 'special' offers.

Hi Jeff & Mark, Mark's suggestion is a good one- I've heard many good reports about 'Dell' laptops. I received my laptop as a gift in April 2006 - it's a 'Sony Vaio' VGN-FE11H. I've had no problems with it at all and it has some excellent features including: WXGA "X-black LCD" which means that the visual contrast on the screen is really enhanced. I'm really pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone. I'm sure the latest 'Sony Vaio' laptop models will be even better! Andrew

Hi Paddy, Yes... I did sorry... I had just read one of Mark's posts beforehand and must have still had him in mind. Hope you are having a good day too? You should be receiving some post from me next week BTW! i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gifAndrew

Any ideas guys ?! Hi Jeff, It all depends on how much money you want to spend. Dell have always produced a good laptop, as have Toshiba and HP Compaq. I've had one of each over the years.. My current laptop is an Acer. It's now three years old and still going strong. It's got a 64-bit processor, over a GB of RAM and is running Windows Vista Ultimate quite well. Tesco's do a good deal on an Acer laptop at the moment. If you're only going to be watching videos, you won't need a massive processor, but I would recommend 512MB RAM for WIndows XP and 1GB RAM for Vista as the minimums. Most laptops have 40GB HDD as the minimum along with a DVD-CD rewriter. There shouldn't be any need to spend more than £400-500 in the New Years Sales.. ~Chris

Thanks guys, I'll think on it. I went to Comet yesterday for a demo and the sound quality wasn't that great but it's amazing how much power you can get through a pair of add-on speakers !
