Hi everyone! I can't wait to watch next week's show, especially the part when the students are busking. I wonder who got this idea It will also be interesting to see them confront a hostile audience. Stephany

But only for UK residents. 'Sorry, this video content is only available for viewers in the UK' Raymond Why is the video content only for viewers in the UK? UK residents can use TV!!! BBC2 can't be received easily in Germany. Everybody who can watch it ... Enjoy! Thomas

Hi Joyce! Yes with digital TV it's possible to receive BBC2 in Germany. You need the satellite Astra 2D for it. Unfortuneately you need another satellite for German TV which makes it a little more expensive. Unfortuneately my landlord says "No" to a stellite dish (?). I hope that's the correct word for the antenna. Well, I want to change my flat next year anyway. i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif Too late for Classical Star but maybe I can receive some UK TV programmes then. Thomas

Let's not get hyped up about this show. I can watch BBC 2 via cable here (in the Netherlands - no satellite dish required), and I watched the show as it unfolded. I even recorded it on my hard disk.
I found the show a dead bore, with 18 instrumentalists being portrayed all too briefly (a few seconds live), judge's comments that made no sense to people who only could see those small excerpts.
Eventually, the judges selected 9 out of the 18 who could continue on to a special session in an "academy". The announcement of the 9 "winners" lacked any build up of tension. Particiipants were thrown out or accepted into the academy almost 3 at a time, with hardly a proper reason given, except for some standardly formulated reasons which absolutely meant nothing.
The first episode was a complete waste of time - they could (and should) have started with the first session from the academy by the 9 remaining musicians. For the audience, it was impossible to even begin to identify with any of the 18 participants - far too much information was crammed in one hour about far too many musicians.
Really, if you have missed this episode, you missed very little. As I said, I recorded the show on my hard disk. And the first action I subsequently performed was to delete it. This is not the type of stuff I want to waste any more of my time on.
Gerrit
PS Thomas,
The contents is blocked for people outside the UK for legal reasons. As far as I know, the BBC has only rights to broadcast some (or most) of their material inside the UK. That's why they also try to block internet access from outside the UK as much as possible.

Hi Gerrit, I think that is the point - you can't do justice to 18 musicians and four judges in a one hour show. But this was merely a build-up show; things should improve when the academy phase starts next week and subsequently as competitors drop out. The show will then have a much better chance of engaging with us, the audience. I agree with you that there isn't really anything good enough to warrant making video clips available from this particular episode (I recorded it too) but I suspect that in future weeks, there will be. Cheers, Dave

Hello everybody! I thought the first show was really a documentary rather than entertainment, but I found it quite interesting and I'm certainly looking forward to the rest of the series. I haven't seen enough to be able to pick a favourite contestant yet, but I hope to next week. Best Wishes, Richard

Hi All Just watched the second week of this series and I thought it was a lot more engaging than the first. This was the first week of the Academy with the nine contestants being taken through various musical challenges until the first eliminations at the end. All are excellent musicians. Jeanine (Fiona Pears look alike) stood out for me from the start but was only just kept in for a second week (only goes to show that I know nothing about classical music ). Despite having an age advantage I thought she stood out in terms of personality and commercial potential. However, Victoria is a close second even thought she is a bit reserved. Without being sexist I think one of the girls will win. Martin

Hi Martin,
I absolutely agree with you about Jeanine. I thought she was the only one of the nine who was certain to get through. Sure, they are all excellent musicians but Jeanine really performs the work rather than just stand there and play it. Despite the fact that she only just scraped through tonight, at the moment, I would still tip her to win.

Hi Martin and Roger, I just watched the second episode and I'm a bit surprised that Jeanine didn't make it through straight away. She was not given the praise she deserved. The judges seemed more impressed by Victoria. She is indeed talented but a bit cold in my opinion whereas Jeanine is so much lively and enthusiastic. The comparison between the two violonists is inevitable but I suppose that it means that they will both go very far. If you ask me to pick between the two, I'd say Jeanine without hesitation. Maybe Victoria could learn from watching Fiona Pears performing and how to really get a feel for the music. She gives the impression of one who has studied the violin very seriously and worked on technique but not quite got the natural feel to really sell the instrument or performance. Jeanine seemed to have more feel of the music. Put the amazing technique and the feeling together and you get...Nicola Benedetti (another of Bedlam's artists). I have to say I'm very impressed by the Irish pianist (Sophie I believe was her name). James
