Hi Steve, It certainly doesn't have to be someone from Bedlam, there are several other possibilities I can think of. But if it is, well we have no idea what financial arrangements are in place and probably, we never will so [edit] it's a bit pointless to speculate about it - let's stop. Dave Sorry, Dave. Gosh, so much happening and it is only three or four days I have been absent (I think). Only just picked up your message but I don't think my latest post on this will offend? Peter S.

In keeping with the theme of "Kiwi Young Achievers" maybe Sophie could go all by herself. Or since she's quite the chess player, she'd could pay Abbo his fee saying, "Here's your check, mate!" Oh I like that Steve. That's great. Peter S.

I find this award, emanating as it does from London, rather curious. Isn't the term "global Kiwi achiever" a little redundant? To achieve as a Kiwi is to be recognised 'round the globe. And I'm not sure which comes first. I wonder whether Hayley's achievements would have been possible had she not gone global in the first place. The market in her homeland is just too small. I further suspect she sold so well in NZ because she sold well globally. Maybe her music was deemed more worthy locally once she established herself internationally. In a way it's too bad they couldn't have produced Pure, Odyssey and Treasure in her own country. They can make superior movies that show the rest of the world how it's done, but sadly need to outsource their musical production.

Hi Steve, Well Hayley's chart success has certainly been "global" - both sides of the Globe, in fact (and that's only NZ and the UK!). She did, of course, have a 4x platinum album and a platinum album in NZ, before ever she left those shores... Cheers, Dave

Cheers, Dave Heh I suspect that there is validity to both positions here....Hayley, I think, enjoyed her initial success in NZ as primarily a child phenom - and I strongly suspect that left to that market alone, the novelty would have faded pretty quickly. This is nothing against Hayley, it is simply what happens about 99 percent of the time. However The fact that she went global and became quite popular - and I think the national pride which then ensued - made her a more durable figure in NZ upon her return. Her success at each step made the next step possible. Jon

Your reply 33, Steve. New Zealand did not make the movies--or a least NOT with New Zealand money. There in lies the problem, the global demand and global money-supported enterprise enabling the films to be made IN New Zealand.
Refer both to the autobiography and the biography particularly and it is clear that while New Zealand COULD have launched her internationally the NZ company felt they could not manage the resource to do the job properly. This is both in terms of the monetary commitment and 'too many eggs in one basket' but also in terms of the global expertise.
The NZ company is to be admired in recognising Decca could do the job needed where they could not and to have the decency and long-term foresight to let her go.
She is a means by which NZ is now more widely regarded (I think, after all we are all latched on to appreciating NZ because of her so one assumes that affects world opinion generally) and were anyone else to follow they might now think they could do the job--so the country grows and expands.
What will be interesting is to see if Decca take over either or both Sophie and Isaac (if they want to go that way) or whether the local company would now feel they could handle them globally.
There is another aspect and that is their individual opinions. They might WANT to remain local with a world-wide window but not make the gigantic leap Hayley made.
Peter S,
I corrected a typing error. Richard

I can think of no one that has affected my interest in a country more than Hayley. The same goes for me Socalboy. I did visit New Zealand briefly in 1990 and have wanted to go back ever since. Following Hayley and her career has certainly heightened my desire to re-visit. Never mind being an ambassador for UNICEF; Hayley is probably one of the best ambassadors for her native New Zealand that the country has ever had. Best wishes Grant

Hi James
Thanks for finding this picture of Sophie accepting the award for Hayley. She really looks as though she is enjoying herself. Seems she has excellent dress sense as well - the dress she is wearing is similar (but I'm sure not one of!) to several that Hayley has.
Best wishes Grant
