The line between rock and classical will blur later this month as Hayley Westenra and Dave Dobbyn take the stage at Millbrook Resort. However, finding out which one is the diva is not as straight forward as you'd imagine, as Phil McCarthy reports.

Dave Dobbyn and Hayley Westenra are entering new territory.

The New Zealand rock legend and the world-renowned classical pop singer are gearing up a tour together of New Zealand vineyards in which their vastly different backgrounds will merge for your musical pleasure.

They have performed a couple of songs together as part of promotional work for the tour and have rehearsed both separately and together for the winery shows.

"We're looking forward to it.

"We've got a good repertoire," Dobbyn says.

They first shared a stage together in London at the Shepherd's Bush Empire at a gig organised by Westenra called Hayley's Kiwi Ceili.

Several well-known Kiwi musicians got together to reel off a few "unofficial Kiwi anthems" , she says.

"I felt pretty special," Dobbyn continues.

It was an unlikely pairing that struck an obvious chord as soon as the first duet began. When they ended the night with a stirring version of Dobbyn's Welcome Home it was clear they would work together again.

Things are very different second time around -- New Zealand summer evenings, the stage and backdrop are the spectacular settings of some the finest vineyards.

The In Tune With Nature concert series offers a rare opportunity to see Westenra and Dobbyn, with millions of record sales between them, on the same bill.

They will each perform separately with their own band and collaborate on songs that have stood the test of time. The programme will also feature the talented violin player, Fiona Pears.

Yes, airports are pretty good now at providing resources. A new discovery for me was that at Boston they provided electric sockets in the walls so one could plug one's laptop in to save or recharge batteries so one can fill all one's idle time most profitably.

SHAME TIM. The key to get this right is to be thrown out of a theatre WITH Hayley. A distinction unique to Roger who got thrown out of the Royal Albert Hall through the same door as Hayley.

I am proud to say that I have never yet been thrown out of a pub but several times out of a theatre through overstaying my time with Hayley--except that in mine and other people's experiences, Hayley was ushered through the artists' entrance back stage!

Partly for health reasons but also the nature of her tour I am not in NZ this month. My desire is to be over there when she is singing in the Town Hall. I would make that my main and perhaps only performance must while then taking my time to explore NZ, possibly using CHCH as a permanent base and making forays from there,

Remember a group of us, including Hayley and Steve Abbott, being asked to leave Canterbury Cathedral after her 2006 concert? We carried on with our goodbye's outside before going our separate ways!
