Yes, thanks Dave. Couldn't watch the show live, although I'm sure I would have enjoyed it, because it clashed with my church's "Carols by Candlelight" service. And I haven't unraelled the mysteries of our TV recording kit. Only my wife knew how that works, and her funeral is tomorrow. Too late to ask her (as with many other things).
I might have a go at iPlayer sometime to catch the rest of the show.

Hmm, that's a different tune than I've always heard, and even the lyrics are different. Sort of like Away in a Manger, I guess? I do like the "different" version of Away that Hayley sang (and I also sang in choir once), the other one is too babyish. Sing, don't hit your dad, but he's totally wrong!!

Thank you Dave! I thought it was a great performance, and wish it had made it onto Winter Magic (along with a great number of others). But, nevertheless, a wonderful recording. -Taylor i.postimg.cc/9fYxy370/smilie-big-grin.gif

Hi everyone, back! Glad you liked it, I did too, especially the 'big' ending! First time Hayley has sung this one isn't it? Cheers, Dave

Sing, don't hit your dad, but he's totally wrong!! It's the traditional English tune to this carol - Forest Green, although it is a new arrangement by the conductor, Paul Leddington Wright. And the words are the usual ones sung over here, except they missed a verse out - but that's quite common on Songs of Praise. I do like some of the different carol tunes which I believe are sung in America, but if we try to do anything unusual in church there will always be somebody who says "Oh, that's the wrong tune" But as the show was titled "The UK's Top 10 Carols" I guess it's only right to have the tune that is best known in the UK.

John, did you watch the programme? If so, do you appear in it anywhere? There quite a few audience shots and I do have the complete recording... I'm also open to requests from anyone who watched it all. Oh... while I remember: Hayley sings on Songs of Praise. Click for larger Cheers, Dave

That makes perfect sense to me. I wonder why the tunes get changed? And the lyrics too, for that matter? What other carols are different?

That makes perfect sense to me. I wonder why the tunes get changed? And the lyrics too, for that matter? What other carols are different? Many hymns, including carols, have alternative tunes. One will become popular in one area whereas another will be favoured somewhere else. 'It came upon a midnight clear' is another example, and there are multiple tunes to 'While shepherds watched' but I don't know if any of those are down to American influence. As for the words, many hymns and carols have additional verses which have fallen out of general use, but some may have been retained in other areas - a case of selective omission. And sometimes what I am used to as the second half of a verse gets put before the first half. That was the case in one version of 'O Little Town' that I heard yesterday, and often happens with 'Hark the Herald Angels sing'. Other times, words are changed for 'politically correct' reasons.

Cheers, Dave I appeared several times, but mostly in the distance. I was even in shot with Hayley towards the end of her song, but you wouldn't know it was me. I was in the front row of the stalls, near the middle of the first block to the left (viewed from the audience side) of the stage. I was wearing a blue shirt, the lady at my left was wearing white and a Korean family was to my right. The top half of my face was shown a couple of times, but the clearest shot of me was during the applause for Susan Boyle.

Hi Mike, thanks for that, I'll start a new thread and will record it in case it's anything new. We shall see.
