So, does anyone know how the album is doing in Japan's charts? It's been out almost 2 months, but it's now just barely getting into Christmas time.

So, does anyone know how the album is doing in Japan's charts? It's been out almost 2 months, but it's now just barely getting into Christmas time. Hi Libby, As far as I can tell, it hasn't entered the Japanese chart (though I ponly have access to the top 50 at the moment). Hayley wasn't on TV at the time of the album release there (when she did last some concerts there) so the record company may have decided to delay promoting it when the TV show that she recorded is shown... early December if I recall correctly. Meanwhile, with one week to release date in the UK, here is the current pre-release CD chart from Amazon UK www.amazon.co.uk/gp/new-releases/music/ref=pd_nr_zgc_m_h__music_more?pf_rd_p=468107153&pf_rd_s=right-5&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=297457&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=0VBPJ4SJATYTXWFQPKKQ : 1. Where We Are - Westlife 2. The Greatest Day - Take That Present The Circus… 3. Heroes - Coldstream Guards 4. My Christmas - Andrea Bocelli 5. O Fortuna - Rhydian 6. Winter Magic - Hayley Westenra 7. An Evening with Il Divo: Live in Barcelona - Il Divo 8. Wonderland - Faryl Smith 9. This Is War - 30 Seconds to Mars (Artist) 10. My Christmas (Deluxe Edition) - Andrea Bocelli Rhydian is overall ranked 84 and Hayley 146 so there's quite a gap to bridge before she can climb in the pre-releases. Dave

Hello folks! I've just heard an advertisement for 'Winter Magic' on Classic FM. Richard (from the other thread). Thanks Richard, thank goodness! I assume that Faryl will be treated similarly by Decca and indeed both remain locked together in the Amazon rankings (as they have done for weeks). Currently, Faryl is no. 127 and Hayley is no. 130. They know each other well and I am sure they are friends but it will be fascinating to see which of the two sells more copies. Intuitively you'd say Faryl because of her talent show fame, but it seems that they may have 'locked horns' next week (if the supermarkets give each equal prominence). I hope Faryl does very well as I like her music, but in this particular friendly fight, may the better Hayley win! Cheers, Dave

Faryl and Hayley are even closer now, no. 7 & 8 respectively in the UK prereleases list for Monday, no. 115 and 116 respectively in the overall rankings; both slowly climbing. You can't get any closer together than that at Amazon! Winter Magic is ranked 331 at Amazon.com, which normally implies a place in the Billboard Classical Crossover chart but not the main chart for next week. I'm hoping it will appear in next week's Japanese chart for the first time, following Hayley's NHK TV performance yesterday. Thanks Jillian for the NZ chart information (no. 28), we must hope that it climbs in next week's chart as we get closer to Christmas. Cheers, Dave PS If I was a UK supermarket music dept. manager, I'd put them side by side on the shelf, right in the middle, at eye level of course. I bet a lot of people would buy both!

BTW I have been watching TV tonight, and have not seen any adverts for WM. Faryl's album, yes! I could have miseed something, I can't watch all of the channels all of the time, but is Hayley being starved of promotion yet again!!! Martin (from another thread) Hello Martin, Thanks for that information. If it is true that Faryl has had some TV adverts and Hayley none (or fewer) then undoubtedly Faryl will do significantly better than Hayley this week. I am convinced that given equal treatment, they would have sold similar numbers but if there is no TV advertising, Hayley's album will struggle. It may indicate that Faryl will have a better shelf position in the shops, so is worth spending more advertising budget on. I now realise why Faryl has got significantly ahead of Hayley in the (probably final) preorder listings this evening, that had been puzzling me. no. 7 Faryl (101 overall), no. 9 Hayley (131 overall)... not good. Can I ask anyone who is out and about in UK supermarkets on Monday to post here Hayley and Faryl's respective "chart" position on the shelves, the name of the supermarket and if it's a combined "chart" (with compilations included) or separate Artist "chart" (also HMV)?
Cheers, Dave

Just got home from my weekly shop at ASDA. They have a top 80 "Artist" chart which has Faryl at No.30 and Camilla at No.68. No sign of Hayley! On the positive side Classic FM aired an advert for "Winter Magic" at about 10.15am which included snippets of 'Sleigh Ride', 'The Christmas Song' and 'Silent Night' and I think it said "available from Amazon". Best wishes Grant

Hi Dave & Grant
I can confirm your findings in Asda down here in Southampton as well, Grant.
Not only that, there was no sign of Hayley at Sainsburys either. A lady was stocking the CD shelves as I looked so I asked her if she had Hayley's CD. She looked through her list for both this week and next and Hayley didn't appear in either, though Faryl appeared to be in the mid-40s on this week's list (though I don't know if that was the chart number).
I had to get it in HMV's at the end, for £10.99, where they had plenty of copies and it was well-displayed in the New Releases section.
Kind regards
Colin

Hi Dave Just been to Tesco and only top 30 displayed. No sign of either Hayley, Camilla or Faryl. There were three new "Classical" entries:
12 - Music from the Vatican (Alma Mater) 19 - Andrea Bocelli - My Christmas 20 - The Coldstream Guards - Heroes
Interesting to note that they have dropped the price of Susan Boyle's album to £7.70, probably in reaction to Amazon at £7.68.

Just been out in Rugby with the idea of possibly some shellf rearrangement. ASDA does not have WM, although I saw Rhydian (highest position) Faryl, Camilla and Il Divo in that order, with a Katherines two albums mixed in. ASDA had Take That at no 1, above Susan Boyle!!!!
WH Smith had Rhydian and Faryl only. And Susan at no 1.
Tesco is a little way out of town, i will gp there tomorrow if I get chance and it isn't raining too hard!
Unfortunately it looks likely that Winter Magic is not available in Rugby!!

Hello folks! There are plenty of copies of 'Winter Magic' available in the HMV store near Oxford Circus. It is placed at No.55 in the General Chart, while Faryl Smith's 'Wonderland' does not appear in the top eighty. In the Classical Chart, 'Winter Magic' is at No.11 with 'Wonderland' at No.14. I looked in the other HMV store near Bond Street and couldn't make sense of the charts at all, so the positions may vary in different branches. Richard

Hi Folks,
Just thought I would report the situation in Colchester.
Winter Magic does not show in Sainsburys, Asda or Tescos but HMV has it at number 56.
Wonderland however is 54 in Sainsburys,30 in Asda and 38 in Tescos. In HMV it is shown as a new release.

I don't now expect it to enter the main album charts (top 75) at all so it will struggle to beat the sales of River of Dreams. RoD has sold perhaps 30,000 or so since last year whereas Treasure sold 87,000. Clearly, the supermarkets weren't taking the risk this time round, at this time of year (when you need do much better than usual to chart). I am now expecting a position somewhere in the top ten of the classical chart (if it qualifies at all, which it may not) and hopefully in the top 200 of the main chart but not the top 75, unless something changes. Most of Hayley's demographic and their younger relatives who might have bought it as a Christmas present may never even see Winter Magic and most won't hunt around to get it from HMV or Amazon. Yet the pre-order situation clearly indicated that it would do as well as Faryl, if promoted equally - so something, somewhere has gone wrong (again) and it's all very disappointing in the UK. Even in NZ, if we are honest. Classical charting is good in Taiwan, I wonder if it gets in the main chart there? Dave

I wonder how some of these charts are compiled anyway. Supermarkets won't have sold any copies of todays releases, yet they have given them chart positions. Sounds a bit dodgy to me, as if somebody is just making things up.
But I agree, this is hugely disappointing. Many other small towns will be like Rugby. To quote an internet site about the town "There is no HMV or other decent record shop in Rugby". And the ones they do mention are now closed, the last specialist (in rock music) record shop closed last year, and even Woolworths is gone. So we are stuck with ASDA, WH Smith and Tesco! Ugh,,.
It is of course these supermarkets that are partly responsible (Internet music vendors too i know). By selling top 50 albums at prices that undercut the record shops, they have taken most of their business. It is becoming no longer possible to enjoy browsing in a record shop in most towns these days.
And as for Hayley, she loses out once again. I get more and more annoyed every time something like this happens - what on earth have they got against her.
The only answer is probably to make sure a lot of copies are sold through theoutlets that do stock WM, so that the supermarkets will take notice. I'm sure WM would sell well if people knew it existed and it was played a bit on the radio. You could have the best product ever, but if you keep it a secret nobody will buy it.
BTW I would also have bought the Bandaged Together album if I could have found a copy in a shop, but I couldn't. I am reluctant to buy UK releases on the Internet unless they are very specialist, I would rather support my local shops.
